Ancient Israelites didn't sit at the table like that famous "Last supper" picture shows. Ancient Israelites reclined at supper. Like this:

Ancient Israelites reclined to eat because when they were slaves they couldn't. Slaves had to stand. Thus reclining at supper symbolized their freedom from slavery.

The verses in the gospels that speak about when they ate at supper all use the greek verb "anapiptó", which means to fall back!
