Outside of him being the Kings Hand before Ned, he helped raised Ned and Robert they viewing him like a father figure. He fought with Ned and Robert in "Roberts Rebellion" against the Mad King when the King wanted Jon to turn them over to him so they can be executed along with Neds brother and father. He died of poisoning.. which you know.
He is also married to Ned's sister in law and controlled the East more specifically Eyrie.

The same person who built Winterfell in the North also built the Wall, a descendant of the Starks over a thousand years ago named Brandon "the Builder" Starks (which is where he gets the nickname, also Neds deceased brother and son is named after him "Bran")
It was built up to keep the White Walkers, Others, Wildlings out of the Seven Kingdoms. It is said it was smaller originally but built up over time to its current height by the Nights Watch. Their are 19 castles/fortresses built along it but only 3 are in use, as the Night's Watch doesn't have nearly the amount of soldiers as it once did.
When you hear "Winter is Coming" more than the cold could be coming over those borders..
