Moore Lawyer Cites MSNBC Anchor Who Hails From Canada To Defend Candidate

A lawyer representing Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore, who stands accused of sexually pursuing minors and sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl years ago, on Wednesday argued that cultural norms surrounding the age of consent vary throughout the world.

Moore’s lawyer Trenton Garmon made the argument in response to questions about Moore’s remark last week that he did not recall “dating any girl without the permission of her mother.”

“Why would he need permission from any of these girls’ mothers if they weren’t underage?” Stephanie Ruhle asked Garmon on MSNBC.

“That’s a good question, and culturally I would say there’s differences. I looked up Ali’s background there,” Garmon replied, referring to Ruhle’s co-host Ali Velshi. “Wow. That’s awesome, that you’ve got such a diverse background. It was cool to read through that.”

“What does Ali’s background have to do with dating a 14-year-old?” Ruhle shot back.

“I’m not finished with the context of it,” Garmon said.

“Well, please answer,” Ruhle pressed. “What does Ali Velshi’s background have to do with dating children, 14-year-old girls?”

“Sure,” Garmon said. “In other countries there’s arrangement through parents for what we would refer to as consensual marriage, so—”

“Ali’s from Canada,” Ruhle interrupted. “Ali’s from Canada.”

“I understand that. And Ali’s also spent time in other countries. It’s not a bad thing,” Garmon said.

“So have I,” Ruhle said.

“I don’t know where you’re going with this, Trenton,” Velshi, who was born in Kenya and raised in Ontario, said.

Moore’s Lawyer Issues Fiery Call to Release Yearbook: Is Signature ‘Genuine or Is It a Fraud?’

If you thought Roy Moore was going down quietly, think again.

At a Wednesday news conference, Phillip Jauregui — attorney for the Alabama Senate candidate — made no mention of his client dropping out of the race amid five accusations by women claiming Moore pursued relationships with them while they were teenagers and he was in his 30s.

Jauregui ignored four of the claims, and centered on the one lodged against Moore by Beverly Young Nelson. The lawyer tried to discredit the claim by refuting a statement made by Nelson that she had not seen Moore since the alleged incident. Jauregui provided evidence to the contrary, as Moore issued an order in Nelson’s 1999 divorce proceeding against her husband.

“There was contact,” Jauregui said. “Judge Moore signed an order in that case.”

Mostly, though, Jauregui attempted to make the Moore scandal a referendum on Nelson’s attorney, Gloria Allred — who is not popular among conservatives. In his six-minute address, Jauregui mentioned Allred four times. He issued a fiery demand for Allred to produce a yearbook in which Nelson claims Moore wrote an inscription calling her “beautiful”:

I’ve got a question, Gloria Allred and Ms. Nelson. Do you still hold everything written in the yearbook was written by judge Moore or written by someone else? It’s not an allegation. It’s a question. We demand that you immediately release the yearbook to a neutral custodian so that our expert. You can send your expert as well if you like to, so that our expert can look at it. Not a copy on the Internet, the actual document so we can see the lettering. We can see the ink on the page and the indentations and we can see how old is the ink. Is it 40 years old or a week-old? Release the yearbook so we can determine, is it genuine or is it a fraud?

Another Woman Comes Forward Alleging Roy Moore Groped Her

Another woman has come forward to allege that Roy Moore groped her.

AL.com’s report tonight features a woman named Tina Johnson saying Moore was inappropriate with her when she was in his office:

Almost from the moment she walked in to Moore’s office, Johnson said, Moore began flirting with her.

“He kept commenting on my looks, telling me how pretty I was, how nice I looked,” recalled Johnson. “He was saying that my eyes were beautiful.”

It made her uncomfortable. “I was thinking, can we hurry up and get out of here?”

She said she was 28 at the time, and she was in his office signing over custody of her 12-year-old to her mom.

Johnson even claims that Moore “asked questions about her young daughters, including what color eyes they had and if they were as pretty as she was.”

But it was when she and her mother got up to leave that she says he groped her:

After her mother walked through the door first, she said, Moore came up behind her.

It was at that point, she recalled, he grabbed her buttocks.

“He didn’t pinch it; he grabbed it,” said Johnson. She was so surprised she didn’t say anything. She didn’t tell her mother.

And this report has an account from another woman who says she was 17 and working at a Red Lobster when Moore asked her out.

Kelly Thorp claims when she asked him if he’s aware of how old she is, his response was, “Yeah. I go out with girls your age all the time.”

This news report dropped tonight following a press conference in which a lawyer for Moore raised questions about the authenticity of that signature in Beverly Nelson‘s yearbook, demanding it be handed over for handwriting analysis.

AL Secretary Of State: Moore ‘Innocent Until Proven Guilty’ Of Sex Allegations

Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill (R) on Wednesday said the state’s Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore is “innocent until proven guilty” of allegations of sexual misconduct that six women have brought against him.

“What I have stated before and what I maintain is that an individual is innocent until proven guilty,” Merrill said on MSNBC.

He said the “original” allegations against Moore “are very serious.”

“And I think they need to continue to be vetted. I think all allegations or additional information that’s brought forward should be vetted,” Merrill said. “And again I feel as though if Judge Moore is indeed guilty of these allegations, that he should withdraw.”

Merrill on Tuesday said it was “possible” the women accusing Moore of misconduct were “making it up.”

Two more women came forward late Wednesday with allegations against Moore, bringing the total count to seven. Kelly Harrison Thorp told AL.com that Moore asked her out when she was 17 years old. Thorp said that Moore told her he went out with girls her age “all the time.”

Tina Johnson alleged that Moore groped her when she was 28 years old as she was leaving his law office.

Four women last week alleged that Moore pursued them for relationships when they were teenagers and he was in his early 30s. One, Leigh Corfman, said Moore initiated a sexual encounter with her when she was 14 years old. A fifth accuser, Beverly Young Nelson, on Monday said Moore sexually assaulted her when she was 16 years old.

Moore has denied the allegations.

Alabama GOP Says It ‘Supports Judge Roy Moore As Our Nominee’ – Talking Points Memo

The Alabama Republican Party is officially standing by their man.

The state party put out a statement defending Roy Moore on Thursday afternoon, attacking “the media and those from afar” for meddling in Alabama’s Senate election, and encouraging voters to back him in the Dec. 12 election.

That statement comes in spite of the growing list of women who have come forward to accuse him of inappropriate sexual acts, up to nine as of Thursday afternoon, and calls from national Republicans for Moore to drop out. The accusations include Moore asking multiple teen girls on dates, sexually assaulting one of them, having a sexual encounter with another when she was 14 years old to groping another woman without her permission.

“The ALGOP Steering Committee supports Judge Roy Moore as our nominee and trusts the voters as they make the ultimate decision in this crucial race,” Alabama Republican Party Chair Terry Lathan said in a statement. “Judge Moore has vehemently denied the allegations made against him. He deserves to be presumed innocent of the accusations unless proven otherwise. He will continue to take his case straight to the people of Alabama.”

As TPM reported Thursday morning, the state party decided in a Wednesday night meeting to stand by Moore rather than disqualify his nomination. But the statement defending Moore is a step further than some state Republicans expected — especially following heavy criticism from the national party and demands that Moore drops out from lawmakers including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who opposed Moore in the primary.

Moore has steadfastly refused to drop out of the race, and has some close allies on the state party committee. While some others on the 21-person committee want him gone, many are afraid of Moore’s rabid base, as some are running for office in the state and face primaries.

“This is an effort by Mitch McConnell and his cronies to steal this election from the people of Alabama and they will not stand for it,” he said at a Thursday rally before refusing to answer reporters’ questions about whether he’d dated any teenage girls when he was in his 30s, or whether he’d inappropriately touched any of them.

According to Buzzfeed, his supporters aggressively yelled at reporters after the event for daring to ask Moore questions.

Here’s Latham’s full statement:

The ALGOP Steering Committee supports Judge Roy Moore as our nominee and trusts the voters as they make the ultimate decision in this crucial race.”

“Judge Moore has vehemently denied the allegations made against him. He deserves to be presumed innocent of the accusations unless proven otherwise. He will continue to take his case straight to the people of Alabama.”

“There is a sharp policy contrast between Judge Moore, a conservative Republican who supports President Trump, and the liberal Democrat who will fight and thwart the agenda of our president. We trust the Alabama voters in this election to have our beloved state and nation’s best interest at heart.

“Alabamians will be the ultimate jury in this election- not the media or those from afar.”

“We are very grateful for the multitudes that have reached out to us with support and prayers. We ask God to guide us, politically and personally, with His mighty strength and wisdom. In turn, we also pray that justice and truth will prevail for all involved in this situation

Bannon Reportedly Urged Sean Hannity to Back Off Roy Moore ‘Ultimatum’

Sean Hannity’s reaction to the developing Roy Moore story has been curious. First, he offered Moore a sympathetic interview, even having a guest on later that night to say that victims of sexual predators are “few and far between.” Next, there was the whole Keurig debacle and, well, the less said about that the better. Finally, Hannity issued Moore a scathing ultimatum, addressing the Alabama candidate and demanding “You must remove any doubt [within 24 hours.] If he can’t do this, then Judge Moore needs to get out of this race.”

Guess what happened next? Time marched on, as it usually does, and Hannity quietly swept the whole thing under the rug, telling viewers the next day that he had received a call from Moore that addressed all of his concerns and that he was free to stay in the race.

What the heck happened there? What happened to the ultimatum?

CNN’s Rebecca Berg has reported that Steve Bannon, a long-time supporter of Moore, stepped in and might have put the kibosh on the whole thing.

“An intervention by Steve Bannon might have moved Sean Hannity off of his initial stance questioning inconsistencies in Roy Moore’s stories,” she wrote. “Bannon called Hannity following his Tuesday night ultimatum and urged the host to dial back the harsh criticism, a source familiar with the conversation confirmed. On Wednesday night’s show, Hannity said it’s up to the voters to decide.”

Meanwhile, not only is Roy Moore staying in the race, he’s also comparing his integrity to hemorrhoids. What a time to be alive.

White House’s New Defense Of Trump’s Moore Silence: He Supported Strange!

The White House’s director of legislative affairs on Friday offered an unusual defense of President Donald Trump’s silence regarding accusations against U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore: The President supported Moore’s opponent in the Republican primaries.

The White House said in a written statement last week that Moore should step aside if the allegations of sexual misconduct against him are true. Since then, Trump has repeatedly ignored reporters’ questions about whether he believes Moore’s numerous accusers, and therefore, whether he believes Moore should exit the race.

On Friday, CNN’s Dana Bash asked Marc Short, the White House legislative director, why Trump has remained silent on Moore while attacking Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) for alleged sexual misconduct.

“Is the President not being a hypocrite in tweeting about Al Franken and saying nothing about allegations about the Republican, Roy Moore?” she asked.

Short said “there’s a little short-term memory here.”

“The President went down and campaigned against Roy Moore,” he said. “He campaigned for Luther Strange. The President was very active in this campaign. He chose a different candidate.”

Moore won the Republican Senate primary on Sept. 26. The first accusations of misconduct against him — namely, allegedly making sexual advances on a 14-year-old when he was 32 — were reported by the Washington Post on Nov. 9.

Trump also threw his support behind Moore the moment he defeated Strange.

Short continued: “The President, even when he was traveling overseas, put out a statement that says, ‘If these allegations are true, he should step aside.’ So the President’s been very clear on this. At some point, Dana, we have to trust the people of Alabama to make the right decision. Everybody here in D.C. wants to decide for them what to do. The President weighed in. It’s now up to them to make a decision.”

Bash countered: Why won’t Trump simply call for Moore to step aside? “Does the White House — do you — believe the women?” she asked.

“I think that what we’ve said is that Roy Moore’s, so far, explanations have not been satisfactory,” Short said, before returning to his previous point: “But at the same time, Dana, what we expect is what we have said: We campaigned against him. The President was clear in that, Dana. I think that at this point we believe that it’s up to the people of Alabama to make a decision.”

“So he’s not speaking out in part because he didn’t want him in the first place?” Bash asked.

“The President chose a different candidate, he chose Luther Strange,” Short said. “That’s who he supported.”

“Do you think he has a moral obligation, as the President of the United States—” Bash began.

“Dana, I don’t know what people want him to do more than going down and campaigning for his opponent,” Short interrupted. “That’s what he did.”

Later, Short repeated the White House’s line that the large list of women accusing Trump himself of sexual assault and harassment in the past are lying.

“The President has been clear that those allegations were not truthful,” he said.

White House Still Won’t Say If Trump Believes Moore Accusers

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Friday once again refused to say whether President Donald Trump believed the accusations against U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore.

Asked about Moore, Sanders pointed to a statement the White House released last week, when revelations of sexual misconduct against Moore were first published in the Washington Post.

Leigh Corfman said Moore tried to initiate sexual contact with her when she was 14 and he was 32. Since then, numerous women have accused Moore of misconduct and assault, mostly when they were teenagers. Moore has denied any wrongdoing and has vowed to stay in the race.

Trump, through a White House statement, said last week that Moore should step aside if the allegations are true. He still hasn’t said whether he thinks they are, instead passing the decision on to Alabama voters.

“Can you tell us whether the President believes the women who are making these allegations against Roy Moore?” CNN’s Sara Murray asked. “And would he be willing to ask the Alabama governor to delay the election or take a step like that to try to intervene in this electoral process in Alabama?”

“The President certainly finds the allegations extremely troubling, as I stated yesterday,” Sanders responded, without answering the initial question. “And he feels like it’s up to the governor and the people in the state of Alabama to make a determination on whether or not they delay that election or whether or not they support and vote for Roy Moore.”

When asked earlier about the difference between Trump and Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), who was accused by a radio news anchor Thursday of forcibly kissing her and groping her while on a USO tour, Sanders pointed to Franken’s apology.

“Senator Franken has admitted wrongdoing and the President hasn’t,” she said. “I think that’s a very clear distinction.”

Sanders separately repeated, when asked, the White House’s line that the numerous women accusing the President of sexual harassment and assault are lying.

Not Going Anywhere: Roy Moore’s Wife Says ‘We Are In A Battle’

The people of Alabama understand the “battle” former Judge Roy Moore is facing in his Senate bid, according to Kayla Moore, the wife of embattled Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore.

Kayla Moore spoke as the headliner at a press conference with his supporters Friday from the steps of Alabama’s state capitol, in an effort to stand by Roy Moore and attack the people who apparently seek to destroy his shot at the U.S. Senate.

The “liberal press” — specifically The Washington Post — supporters of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, Roy Moore’s opponent Doug Jones and the Washington Republican establishment were among the culprits waging a war against her husband, Kayla Moore said. She thanked all of Roy Moore’s supporters for their “prayers,” messages and phone calls since the Post first reported on the allegations of multiple women who claim Roy Moore pursued relationships or unwanted sexual contact with them when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s.

“We are in a battle. … The people of Alabama know him. They have seen what he has done, fighting for life, fighting against abortion and fighting for the acknowledgement of God. Fighting for traditional marriage and fighting for the Second Amendment and our rights, given by God, protected by our Constitution,” she said in remarks that were consistently interrupted by cheers from the crowd gathered.

“So the liberal press, The Washington Post, who endorse Hillary Clinton and also endorsed our opponent, gets involved in the race along with the human rights campaign, the DNC and the Washington establishment,” she said. “All of the very same people who were attacking President Trump are also attacking us. I personally think he owes us a thank you.”

She claimed the Post had called “everybody I have ever known for the last 40 years” and said the publication prints “whatever anyone says” without fact-checking claims.

In its initial story about the allegations against Roy Moore, the Post reporters said they first started pursuing the story when they heard multiple rumors about the misconduct while working on a different story in Alabama. The Post was able to corroborate every account from the women with additional witnesses, including some of the women’s mothers and friends who knew about the alleged incidents when they first happened.

Both Roy and Kayla Moore have repeatedly denied all the allegations against Roy Moore and have called out one woman who claimed the former judge sexually assaulted her and signed her yearbook when she was in high school. Roy Moore’s attorney has asked for the yearbook to be turned over to a third party to examine whether the signature is real, which has been the campaign’s main line of defense against the reports.

Kayla Moore has been publicly attacking The Washington Post for the past week. On Wednesday, she posted the name and phone number of a Post reporter who had been calling friends of the Moore family, claiming the paper was on a witch hunt against them. She’s since edited the post to remove the reporter’s name and number, but added a link that lets people report “inappropriate news organization contact” on the campaign website. The family has also threatened to sue the Post and a local news outlet, AL.com

Kayla Moore ended the press conference, which featured testimony from multiple women, defending her husband’s credentials and his history of being a “gentleman.”

“I have been married to my husband for over 32 years. He was a graduate of West Point and served our country in Vietnam and has always been an officer and a gentleman,” she said. “He is a loving father and a grandfather. Most important, he is a Christian. So let me set the record straight … He will not step down.”
