Petition Calls For Boycott Of Florida Tourism Until ‘Stand Your Ground’ Is Overturned

A petition on MoveOn.org is calling for a boycott of Florida tourism until the state's 'Stand Your Ground' law is overturned. The petition statement reads:

Boycott Florida tourism until the "Stand Your Ground" law is overturned. Send a message to Florida that their state is not a safe place to vacation if their citizens are able to kill anyone they deem suspicious.

The petition will be delivered to the Florida House and Senate and Republican Gov. Rick Scott once it reaches the 2,000 signature threshold.

The "Stand Your Ground" law is a Florida law that states that a person can legally defend him or herself with deadly force against someone else if he or she has a "reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another."

The petition comes in the wake of the George Zimmerman verdict that found the defendant not guilty of all charges related to the killing of Trayvon Martin. The "Stand Your Ground" law has gained national attention from the case, but was not actually used in the trial as a part of Zimmerman's defense.

As of 5:45 p.m., the petition had 1,925 signatures.

Below is the background of the petition as described on MoveOn.org:

Florida is not a safe place to take your family for vacation as long as Florida law permits a citizen to shoot or kill you for merely looking suspicious, and to do it with impunity. Boycott Florida tourism until this dangerous law is overturned. If the murder of Trayvon Martin isn't enough to get lawmaker's attention, maybe a loss in revenue to the state would be.

Finally a sane, logical, intelligent black man... Shit I was starting to think they were all dumb niggas like are on this forum.

Somebody wit meme skills make one with a 9/11 white person crying saying "never forget" and another half with Trayvon with "Get over it"

LOL @ This shit.

So I can provoke you to fight. Kill you, as long as there isn't any witness and tell the officer that you tried to kill me first.

lol....good

SYG has been linked to increase in homicides

and the SYG law WAS actually central to zimmerman's case... don't know why people keep saying its not

written instructions advised the jury to take the law’s central provision into account...under the law, a shooter has a right to stand his ground....and that's the reason why he wasn't arrested that night

smh...really SYG is florida's self defense law

how badly did treyvon girlfriend/friend fuck up during the trial?

She was fine. She proved that TM was the one being followed.

The one who fucked up was the prosecution. They solely focused their case on a charge they couldn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt. They could have very well made a case towards manslaughter and/or aggravated assault and made sure GZ got charged with something.

Instead they threw the case on some art of war shit. They also failed to pick an unbiased jury.

justifiable homicide have gone up a significant amount since the law took effect

Nah, "stand your ground" is the lack of a duty to retreat before using deadly force. Zimmerman didn't claim that he could've retreated from the beating, but chose not to; so his claim doesn't fall under the "stand your ground" (776.013-3) portion of 776. He actually said he was screaming for help and tried to get away, so this would satisfy the "duty to retreat" portion of the law.

This is the base Florida self-defense law:

a person is justified in the use of deadly force and does not have a duty to retreat if:

(1) He or she reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony;

Maryland self-defense:
Self-defense is a defense, and the defendant must be found not guilty if all of the following three factors are present:

1) The defendant actually believed that was in immediate and imminent danger of bodily harm.

2) The defendant's belief was reasonable.

3) The defendant used no more force than was reasonably necessary to defend in light of the threatened or actual harm.

^^^^^^

Why the fuck didn't the prosecution use this evidence for the trial?
Probably felt that shit lacked the necessary credibility/relevance.

It would've also opened the door for the defense to bring forth the same type of evidence against Treyvon.

So long as the evidence backs up your version of the events I don't see why not.

Something change where the justice system no longer works on facts but could of's?

Shit if blacks thought the justice system was unfair before, imagine what it would be like when the state no longer had to prove your guilt through facts but instead just used emotions, like look at this big scary nigga, would you want your daughter talking to him, guilty!!!!!!!!

One of the more ironic things about this entire ordeal is the fact that black men menstruate more than females.

Also if you watched the trial DeeDee was like every other witness, ok for the state, amazing for the defense... Not only did her story suck due to all the lies and personal training she acquired from Martain family lawyer, but if you watched the trail that four minutes in Mark's closing argument was pretty damaging because according to DeeDee it represented the time from which Zimmerman lost sight of Martin, until the time when Martin committed a felony on Zimmerman.

Basically this showed that Martin had roughly four minutes to decide his fate, either he could walk back home where he had already been, which was about 100 yards away, or he could take the opportunity to beat a "Creepy Cracka". He of course chose the latter, got shot, died, and Zimmerman walked away a free man.

Of course you can give credence to the notion, sadly though not a single person in the raging black community can prove it nor can the federal government, from the DOJ to the FBI.

It's like saying prove there isn't a God, you can't, therefore he exists. Stupid logic is stupid, but getting emotional over it and trying to ruin a mans life is beyond pathetic.

Testimony - which was found wanting in credibility, thus inadmissible.

It's like me claiming you're actually a big fat white guy who lives in his moms basement and fucks her, shit I can go down to the police station and "testify" to exactly that... The problem then becomes "prove it".
