It really depends on where you want to go and what you want to do. I personally am not a resort person, I'd rather get out of the hotel and explore the land, people, food, culture and be one with the locals.
If you want the most for your buck I'd suggest a tourist area like Punta Cana as it has all you want as far as nightlife, accommodations and it has the nicest beaches. Puerto Plata is an option also but the beaches there aren't as nice and it doesnt have white sand as Punta Cana does.
Tips:
Plenty of eye candy for you, but beware of "querros". Be extra safe and do not slip up.
Sundays are known as "La dia de la fiesta", everyone is outside with beers, dancing somewhere.
Check out the local "Car Wash" best described as a bar with loud music and plenty of dancing.
If you stay in Punta Cana popular "Discos" aka. Clubs: tourists love Mangu & The Cave
Avoid drinking the tap water as many who aren't from the islands sometimes get sick from it. If you do happen to get sick, ask the bartender for a special drink for it, they'll know what you mean.
Don't be scared to bargain, lol (American=$$$), but be fair.
Knowing at least a little basic Spanish would be extremely beneficial. Learn and take a few phrases with you on your trip. Take a Spanish/English dictionary if need be.
Santo Domingo is a 5 hour drive from Punta Cana, 2 hours away from San Pedro de Macoris. It is amazing for shopping purposes if you will be renting your own vehicle. Do not go to "La Capital" dressed flashy, you WILL get robbed.
Higuey is also great for shopping with places like Iberia as Punta Cana is more expensive. It's about 45 minutes away but worth the ride alone just to enjoy the beautiful scenery, mountains and country life as this is where you'll get to see more of what DR is really like where as tourist areas provide the fantasy.
Have fun, I have no doubt in my mind that you will. Stay safe![]()
