i'll tell you one thing tho, when i saw michelle pfier in that video i was like wtf? i know it was on the soundtrack for the movie, but it still bugged me out that someone as big as her was in a rap video. nowadays if u saw some big white actress in a rap video no one would think it was out of place, but back then i remember being shocked.

the only other actor i remember being in a video was bud bundy in the flow joe video, and i still have no idea why he was in that fucking video.

it's crazy to see the different responses in this thread. no hate. as i said for me it was big daddy kane. I see most people say some dre shit or rakim or bone thugs those are all understandable, but i am really shocked gangsta paradise was that big for people. its kinda crazy. that was a big hit no doubt, but i didnt realize ir brought so many people into the rap shit.

that was a reaaaally effective movie... had a massive impact on how things went for the rest of that era as far as school was looked at...

that's something even Lean On Me couldn't do.

sidebar:

regarding those high school in the hood movies, i always liked that one with samuel jackson. i thought that was crazy, students trying to kill a teacher. haha. or you seen those substitute joints? they got like 4 or 5 of them and the teacher is some army vet or some shit and goes to a bad school and the tough kid gang (with kids that look like they 25 with crazy tats and shit) always wanna fuck up the new teacher cause he making them read and do homework, so he goes on a rampage killing them, cause they going around selling drugs and raping hot female teachers. hahaha. that shit crazy.

and lean on me i just remember that shit was violent as fuck, i was like what the fuck kinda high school is this? my school was bad, but that shit was fucking ridiculous it was a war zone. if that shit was legit like that, i woulda been like mom please homeschool me.

That movie (Lean on Me) was based on a real life school principal, and he really used those tactics. Story was a little embellished, but real.

Ice Cube "The Predator" Lp bange my older brother's cassetett in my walkman like crazy 5th grade summer. Had alternate version of "Check yo self" ft. Das Efx
Ice_Cube_-_The_Predator_-_Album_Cover.jpg
th a similar sample that Salt n Peppa had used in "You make me wanna" and The intro from the film "American me" prison intake was ill. Mad gangsta-socially concious and great production from Sir Jinx. He was the hardest rapper of the period w/ his lyrical capability imo. Also had "Today is a Good Day"

Maybe thats why Coolio got pissed off at Weird Al Yankovich for parodying his shit. Once he did that people probably stopped viewing the song as something serious & I used to laugh at the video cause of that big nigga who was singing, he was sweating hard as hell whenever they showed him lmao

I'll never forget the first time I seen this video on BET. I was about 7 at that time. Fell in love with rap ever since. Still feel real nostalgic every time I hear this song.

being honest, I've always hated "Gangstas Paradise". Shit felt contrived, like he's trying too hard to make something deep but ends up with something that sounds like he just made it to make a buck off of a movie.

hes rapping about the movie, from their point, i thought the lyrics where sick though...

Cause I've been blasting and laughing so long,

That even my mama thinks that my mind is gone

But I ain't never crossed a man that didn't deserve it

Me be treated like a punk you know that's unheard of

You better watch how you're talking and where you're walking

Or you and your homies might be lined in chalk

I really hate to trip but I gotta loc

As they croak, I see myself in the pistol smoke, fool

i know some of the lyrics are kinda cliche, but daum, has there ever been a more cross over tune???

Every bar in the whole song is pretentious.

has there been a more crossover tune? Eminem's "Lose Yourself" and "Love The Way You Lie" both had far more crossover appeal according to the RIAA (5x Plat for both Eminem joints versus 3x Plat for Coolio).

in the states it went 3x plat, overseas even more so, but anyways, im not on about sales, im on about people knowing of the song...

i know 40/50/60 year old english people that know the lyrics to 'gangsta's paradise'!!! they might not even know who coolio is until you say the dude that made gangstas paradise, like i said its still on the radio to this day during prime time uk lunch time, its the only hip hop tune on there, sometimes in the summer, fresh prince/jazzy jeff's 'summertime' is on there, but gangsta's paradise crosses over to far more people than any eminem tune has...

eminem as a person is obviously the ultimate cross over musician, but as a tune, 'gangstas paradise' (and 'summertime' could be a close second) reached far more wider variety of audience...
