I'm gonna say no. College isn't essential.

I was listening to the radio not too long ago, and they were saying how most employers nowadays are looking more for experience and not necessarily a college degree. Most jobs today require on-the-job training and/or a little related experience; no degree necessary.

And as far as I see it, a college degree is only good on paper.

I found this site, where the US Department of Labor compiled a list of high paying jobs, that do not require a degree.

Well this post was helpful and kinda encouraging...In some fields a college degree on paper is preferred, but all the experience you can have with Journalism on your resume might just be enough hopefully.

u can make it without a degree but the odds arent as high and it depends on luck and who u know. its messed up these days cuz the opportunity to get a degree is more and more people are getting degrees ie online or universities. its kinda diluted. now u need more school or u need to get experience or do something to seperate themselves from all the other people with degrees

I guess it depends on the type of job you want. I'm telling you this, there is no one working at this firm that doesn't have a college degree.
Maybe in administration like the secretaries and office managers. But other than that... I think people here have different ideas of good jobs.

College is still necessary, as there are still many fields out there where an employer won't even look at your resume unless you've got a Bachelor's degree, AT MINIMUM. In New York City, you can't become a teacher unless you've got a Master's, when previously you only needed a Bachelor's degree.

Unless you're going into something technical, like auto mechanics or becoming an electrician, a degree is something you should have.
