Do todays' hip hop fans value a rappers image more than actual artistic talent/skill?

Not all the time, but mostly yes.

If it were 100% yes, Kendrick Lamar's goofy lookin' ass wouldn't be on top of the game right now. Our guy is ridiculously talented, but lets be real for a second; the nigga look like shorty shitstain on your block. Every once in awhile you get a guy like Kendrick who has undeniable talent, regardless of his image which I think is literally the last sign of a good culture.

Then of course, the other 70% of the game is filled with gimmicky shit like YMCMB's entire roster (including that lightskin nigga who the bitches love who is getting by like 70/30) lyrically weak goofbals like 2Chainz, white rappers, ect.

But at the same time, its not necessarily a bad thing that some of these artists have a unique image for themselves. For the listener, Its a matter of distinguishing the niggas who are authentically one of a kind, the niggas who are pure fabrications of trendy bullshit, or the niggas who are overall trying too hard to be something they aren't.

Edit: I just want to add, I didnt vote for the last option because I don't feel like 80s and early 90s Hip-Hop had too much of this shit. There was a Hip-Hop aesthetic yes, but the emphasis was strongly based on talent.

I don't care about image it's all about the talent and skill, If only more people did the same the music industry would be much better.

some do but not all, i could point out a guy im bumping to some people round here and they'll be like "nah, that nigga str8 but he aint got swag like rich homie quan"

When niggas start talking about a dude's "swag", who he fuckin, and if he "relevant" as far as internet memes and shit like that then you know it ain't bout music no more.

But in real life tho, who actually does that???? I need names or examples.

I'll say its less now. Nowadays if people like a song, they dont care about how "gangsta" somebody is. Really, without rap city and such, unless you be on the internet, a lotta people just hear somethin in the club or on the radio knowing nothin about the artist. It was way worse back in the 90s-earlier 00s. There was a thing called "keepin it real" rappers rapped about the street and you "couldnt be a studio gangsta". Not only did you image have to match, but your real life. At least what people saw.
