Yeah, she didn't want to be a part of it so they had her die off-screen from some kind of terminal disease.

That wasn't it. Stallone said that when he went to write that new Rocky movie he needed some motivation for Rocky to want to fight again and the only thing he could think of was Adrienne dying. He even called her to ask if she was ok with him killing the character off
