Yo, just curious, Whats it like to live in NY??? I'm dying to move there. Kind of nervous, being a southern chick. I know I'm going to stand out. My accent is "country" smh. *shrugs* Anyone been to NY or live there?? give the heads up on whats its really like. What u like about it? Fun places? Is it dangerous? Females what the niggas like? Lol

Your in for the culture shock of your life... lots of rich white people, from europe, arabs indians asians. etc. fast paced life. and you may end up with a white man because they hit on sisters alot here. white and hispanic men. And asian men dating black women is on the rise.

you DONT need a car. you will have to get to places by subway or train. the best borough for suburban living is staten island. the best borough for suburban living for black folks is Queens. Brooklyn is being filled by Jews, and whites coming in from middle america. (its becoming less and less black) Harlem is now filled with a ton of spanish folks.

Ghetto domincans and puerto ricans think they run the city. etc.

What ya'll niggas do in the winter?? Lol

SOOO MANY THINGS! so many, I go to concerts, Broadway shows, ice skating rinks, the lighting of the tree, rockettes almost every year. Holiday shopping is fun. NY is SOOO beautiful in the winter esp in Nov/Dec the lights and everything. Black friday is always hysterical! During thanksgiving they give turkeys out for free,or like 80% off in certain areas. Halloween is SO much fun in the city, like a big party on the streets of every borough. I usually volunteer at homeless shelters the day before christmas eve every december. New years is like a party too. Spring so many parades etc. NY is the BEST during fall winter and spring season.

But summer is the worst. yes you will have more people out, and more parties, bbqs, beaches, and whatnot but people start killing and fighting each other for no reason more. I swear the death rates in NY increase 150% during the summer. Cops start killing civilians, and acting retarded, arresting people left and right. People get more rude, and tick off easily in the summer.

Plus its gets really hot, and its not a clear cool Hot like in rural areas. Its like a suffocating carbon dioxide in your lungs Hot.

Thats why I usually go on a relaxing vacation during the summer. where I don't have to deal with that mess.

But NY is always live, people here are always hype. You will get use to idiots acting a fool on the train, bus, and streets. I wouldn't trade it for anything sorry. I would never want to move out of NY.

if you wanna pay double what you normally would for a 1 bedroom apartment in some hell hole in the Bronx or Brooklyn go right ahead...

you're already from a dope city, I would soak it up a lil more b4 I moved up north... at least til the economy turns around a lil'...maybe you got a good career and that don't matter tho...which in that case go right ahead...

my advice would be to get you a place in North Jersey...rent's cheaper and more available and you're only a short drive away from the city....

Yeah, I was thinking that....I live in Newark tho.... Its cheaper too....

so is it true that every appartment has roaches, rats or bed bugs? and is there really no larger area with middleclass or upper class blacks like you can find them in atl, d.c. or tx?

lmao what...no

In 2005, the median income among black households in Queens was close to $52,000 a year, surpassing that of whites. No other county in the country with a population over 65,000 can make that claim.

Personally I loved it.

My mother brought a brownstone in NYC and we lived there for a number of years before coming back to London. We travel between both cities though.

I actually liked New Yorkers no nonsense attitudes. It's refreshing, and I guess because we came from England the prices didn't seem too steep (however my mother did notice that cigarettes in L.A were like 5 dollars and in NYC 11 dollars).

I would say though, even though I love that city, there is a 'rat race' feeling. I can't quite explain it.

I don't like Brooklyn though. People look mad 24/7.

Brownstone?? I hear they're alot of money. London?? Oh my gawd, lol

NYC is fast paced so you need to be ready for that. Shit that’s considered good in other big cities (ATL, MIA, LA, DET, etc) is considered average in NYC as far as work performance goes. Culturally, NYC has everything you’d want (Broadway, concerts, museums, restaurants, etc) so you’ll never be bored. If the fast pace of the city scares you, then move somewhere close like NJ or CT where you can get in and out of the city whenever you want within 30 minutes. I live in NJ and have worked in the city before and it works for me.

You got Newark, Jersey City, Montclair, Maplewood, Millburn, S. Orange (where I live) and some other towns in NNJ that are all on a rail line that get you into midtown in less than 40 mins. You get the best of both worlds... you can get into the city whenever you want by car or rail but not have to deal with that NYC rent.

lets put things into perspective, new york is the most expensive city in the country too so its only logical to find the highest incomes there. its not about money you have its about what you can get where you at for that money.

overall regarding nyc i got the impression like its cool for some time but definitely not for life except you want to hang in a manhatten bar with other used up people that resemble the sex and the city cast and dont want to accept the fact that you gave your best years away to that big city lifestyle instead of building something of longevity with your potential.

so i would give it a shot for max. 3 years, i want a big house, a nice car and a family, i dont see how you can get that in new york if you are not sean carter and even he prolly doesnt live there on a daily basis.

Yeah, don't go there.

It's pretty crappy and depressing.

and most of the dudes there wear timbs, jeans, and a Yankee fitted all year around.

They even wear fake fur coats in the summer.

^ Making shit up based on stereotypes, but I bet some of it is true.

You asked if we had a middle class. I answered with a factual statement of middle income wealth. You want a big house, a nice car and a family, define a big house. I live in a 2 floor (not counting the basement) house with a full front yard and a full back yard.

Y'all out of towners only know Manhattan and Brooklyn and define NY by that, and shits disgusting. http://fannysoissonhomes.com/

yeah i agree with the people that say you should live in new jersey or ct. i live in jersey and i'm about 15/20 minutes away from new york. it's very fast paced, in the south i hear people like to stop and have convos with strangers in new york people dont do that shit.

thats what that thread for to tell us outta towners what it is like so thks anyway. i checked the cribs on that real estate agency site and you are right you can find some affordable houses. since they all in long island, what is it like there can you settle down there if you have a fam and shit? i'm not tryin to hate but shit is really crazy down there. just peep them cribs and keep in mind the low taxes and overall lower costs of living, its really hard to not make it an option to move down south

Yeah, I seriously wouldn't consider raising a family anywhere outside on Queens/Long Island. I mean more power to everyone else who does it, but I'm not with the inner city life that is Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island. That part of me is over.

Settling down life wise is cool in long island. Back in the late 90s early 2000s blacks flooded from the city because of the better housing/schooling. The farther out in LI you go, the whiter it gets. But thats not to say that blacks/hispanics don't have strong holds out in suffolk. Actually MS-13 and the bloods out in suffolk have some serious beef. But the black communities are so concentrated that there is serious separation between races. Towns that are right next to each other are like 85% white, turn 2 blocks its 85% black/hispanic. With separate towns, comes separate taxes, with separate schools. So you already know how that fight goes.....Oh yeah and Long Island used to be a KKK stronghold. They definitely set a policy that restricted overpasses to a certain height to keep city folks from coming out.

And yeah I've been trying to leave NY sine I was 16. My mom is from South Carolina so I know all about that southern life. Always wanted to move to Charlotte but stayed up north for school. I can't believe what y'all pay for housing. Shit is craaaaazy.
