Ill say this by the time a record from atlanta breaks in ny it done already broke in every other city them old days is over with you don't need the ny cosign anymore

You're retarded n think too high of atl, jus bc a song hot in Alabama, florida n don't mean its hot everywhere else

This was a great History piece. What I took from it was Atl. celebrates their commercial success and contributions to pop culture. While that's all well and good. They have maybe 3-5 top tier MC's in their history( I am being generous). No Graph artists that we know of. No B-Boys, I guess toomp qualifies as a top notch DJ but that's just one. So, their contribution to Hip Hop has been quite minimal as compared to NYC whom they were chasing and Cali.

Also, while I commend Dre for standing up for the south. It's always quite entertaining that one lil ole city is constantly under attack by an entire REGION. Dre get's his props but the homey didn't say ATL. has something to say. He needed to enlist help.

Records aren't broken nationally in ATL

records can be regional hits for a yr in ATL,but it blows up when it reaches NY

Don't let your ATL bias blind you from facts

There are no major record labels in ATL

Nigga please.

Godzilla came though like Snoop and crushed the buidlings

As cali representative I find it funny how new Yaaawk can't give credit to nobody else. But everybody from elsewhere still acknowledges them even with all the hate they give out......... MESSAGE!!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad they focused primarily on the 80's- early 90's history, people already know about the Crunk era-now already

lol That's back when the whole souwf was actually lyrical and talked about something. Funny thing is, that's when New yaaaawk haterism was at it's all time high. But now they acknowledging y'all and even copying smh. They tolerated us cali folk, but they completely ignored y'all country cats. Even with the few certified classics y'all had under y'all belts smh. When y'all were at your best they ignored you, Now your at your worst and all you hear is y'all on their radio lol. N.Y lost.............?

Funny you brought up the era y'all are most known for(crunk). I'm shocked nobody from the M-town came in here and spoke out on that yet. Even after lil john dropped they names for who started it, it fell on deaf ears.

Buck = crunk (just like D-boy rap = trap rap)

BESIDE JAY, NIKKI AND FRENCH ( WHO ACTS LIKE HE'S FROM THE SOUTH ANYWAY), WHAT NYC ARTIST GETS NATIONAL AIRPLAY...

NO LIE, I HAVE YET TO HEAR BOBBY SMURDA ON THE RADIO

Bobby song is the biggest song in the club this summer. I don't know the radio politics, Labels often "pay" for those spins.

Why were they so focused on creating their "own sound". These coast didn't have their own sound, they basically adopted music that came before them. EPMD was doing funk. The sound depends on the producer, not the region. That's why Dre and Cube was able to fuck with the east and still sound like themselves production and rap wise. Cube was rocking on PE beats. Are they talking about using their own accents? They lucky, England still gets shitted on for their accents.

You have to Love revisionist History. While, goof balls, and media types like to create this divide there never was one. New York MC's always spread Love. Artists from New York have been working with artists from every part of the country from Jump. You herbs that want to throw New York in a bucket as if Artists from new york were in control of Radio or signing artists you are fooling yourselves.

Furthermore, to the whiny cry babies that talk about coming to New York and having to win the crowd over......you punk that's your job. You don't think Bambatta, Rakim, Kane, Wu, Nas, had to go out of state and impress crowds who had never seen or heard them before? Of course they did, difference is they didn't whine about it like hoes.

Those records may be getting played in the southeast region, but not all around the country. They not playing those sings in Detroit,Chicago,Ohio or the whole midewest and west until it's being played in NY

Give an example of a record that didn't played in the tri state that went national?

With all due respect. You don't know what you're talking about. You NYC cats are the ones that let your bias get the better of you. A lot of stuff breaks and is popular everywhere but NYC because people in NYC are so slow to show love to people outside of the Tristate. Just think about No Limit. They never really got in NYC love but they got played all over the South, the West, and the Midwest. Same goes with all that club type music. Just because you didn't hear it in the NYC spots doesn't mean it wasn't being played everywhere else in the country.

Hes talking about now not 15 years ago

Master P got play in NYC

Once you reach a certain level NYC had no choice but to play you at least in the mix

now you're reaching. you can't really believe that hot 97's footprint in the tri state area is larger than ALL of the south (texas, louisiana, mississippi, georgia, fla, ,etc). IF i was an artist i'd go down south first to get my music ran before worrying about up north

when ebro was program director at hot 97 - he admitted himself that they only played the 'hottest songs' and passed on anything else because it was 'too risky' biz wise

they take records that already have a buzz and put their stamp on it. thats not breaking a record

there are no major labels in ATL but most of the influence is still coming from there

Yes Hot 97 broadcasts to like 20 million ppl with one station.

No station has the reach Hot does or power 105 now as well

we talking about jersey,Philly,Conn.Deleware, and a few more states all able to hear one station

Name some early collabos between NYC and people from other regions. And by that I mean real collabos as in each party being on a song doing their own thang. Not like Ice Cube moving to NYC to work with NYC producers and artists because he wanted to utilize that sound.

I'm not saying you're wrong. It's just that the first instance I can really think of where a successful NYC artists showed love to someone down south was when Rae was on Skew It On the Bar B.

Once again ill say this thanks to social media you don't have to break in ny anymore like I said earlier because with people networking they usually find out what's hot and whatever Atlanta puts out it is usually the soundtrack to the club no matter the season
