Two opposing sides are belief and non belief. If you dont believe in a god, you're an atheist, regardless
as has been stated already, there is a third option, which is the entire point of being agnostic.

ag·nos·tic

: a person who holds the view that any ultimate reality (as God) is unknown and probably unknowable; broadly : one who is not committed to believing in either the existence or the nonexistence of God or a god

athe·ist

: one who believes that there is no deity

note that the atheist BELIEVES there is no deity. the agnostic does not believe such a position is correct.

The point is that nobody in the English speaking world really doesn't know their own fucking opinion on whether there's a god or not.

"Do you think god exists?"

"I don't know."

"You don't know what your own brain thinks about that particular question?"

"......."

Shots fired at agnostics?

An agnostic is someone who claims to not know of a gods existance. If you claim to not know, you are an atheist technically because you have no belief of the god.

Um no....did you not read the examples i listed above? Ok maybe this will help some you who wrongfully believe you can't be an agnostic and be a Christian or atheist http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnostic_theism "An agnostic theist believes the proposition at least one deity exists is true, but regards the truth or falsehood of this proposition as unknown or inherently unknowable. The agnostic theist may also or alternatively be agnostic regarding the properties of the god(s) they believe in.[1]" This really isn't that hard to understand.

Okay I see where ya'll are comin from but this is how I see it...

Theist Believe in God's existance

Agnostic Fail to believe in God's existence

Atheist Believe in God's nonexistence

The middle being the agnostic. The upper, theist; and lower, atheist

Both the middle and the lower are non-theists, which we can just go ahead and box up as atheists, the agnostic being a "weak" atheist.

If we take Agnostic as not knowing, it's kind of pointless because nobody truly, concretely KNOWS whether some kind of god exists or not. We either believe or fail to believe. Nobody KNEW an atom could be split until it was actually done

Passage taken from book, Atheism Explained, David Ramsay Steele:

"So there are three types of non-believer in something:

1. The agnostic, who refuses to render a verdict on whether that thing exists.

2. Someone who denies the existence of the thing, but does not believe that the thing's non-existence can be conclusively demonstrated.

3. Someone who denies the existence of the thing and believes that its non-existence can be conclusively demonstated. (When applied to the God question, this third kind of non-believer is called a 'disproof atheist'.)"

...."Agnostic is a word deliberately invented by T.H. Huxley in 1869 to refer to anyone who, like Huxley himself, has no belief in God but was not prepared to deny God's existence. Prior to that date, all 'agnostics' had been recognized as atheists."

Very ironic study considering the Pope has protected pedophiles his entire life. And yet he is adored by millions of religious people around the world LOL. I'm not atheist but I find this study a prime example of why humans are a lost species.

we CANNOT do this, because agnostic and atheist do not mean the same thing.

When it comes to god(s) they are two forms of non belief.

Again,

What you just described is called weak and strong atheism.... agnosticism has NOTHING to do with belief.

With agnosticism, you fail to believe in a god because you take the stance not to fall on the end of 'belief in a god'. Even though you have not yet chosen to bounce to the other end of the spectrum and deny gods existence, you fail to believe in a god either way

Omg dude seriously??? How can you be so stubborn it's not even a matter of subjective opinion? It’s a fact that you're wrong. Just concede.

"With agnosticism you fail to believe"

No you don't. there are plenty of agnostic theist (people who believe in god) it's NOT a belief system.....Most agnostics aren’t even atheist they're deist or moderate Christians who think God(s) lie outside our realm of knowledge.....By definition science can only evaluate NATURAL phenomenon therefore it cannot say anything that lies beyond the realm of nature and God fits into the definition of super natural. Therefore the system we use to discover things about our world (science) can never say anything about god and if you believe this than you are an agnostic. This doesn't affect your belief in if a God exit or not.

Is the status of God knowable or discoverable by human means: How you answer this question determines if you're agnostic or not

Do you believe that one exist: this is a yes or no question that determines if you’re an atheist or theist

wait, why are we doing this? earlier, you used a dictionary to address the terms. so let's do it again:

ag·nos·tic

: a person who holds the view that any ultimate reality (as God) is unknown and probably unknowable; broadly : one who is not committed to believing in either the existence or the nonexistence of God or a god

athe·ist

: one who believes that there is no deity
looks like we can definitely use those two different words for two different schools of thought

I didn't use the dictionary. Someone pulled those definitions from an online dictionary and I responded to it. I'm doing that because I'm giving you another opinion plus history and background on the word

What you're saying is not that you're agnostic on the theory of god itself but the question of whether or not god is understandable by human minds. If you've reached that question, most likely you've come to the conclusion that a god exists. As you said, most of what you're describing are deists or theists who have already decided that a god exists but are undecided on the question: Is god understandable? If you're just agnostic on the god question alone, then you don't claim to believe in a god, otherwise you would be a theist/deist/whatever.

well, look, opinion is what it is. the problem with the history/background is that it still doesn't change the fact that there's a clear difference between the positions and that using the different terms allows us to clearly describe what someone's position is.
