I think getting people to police their own community would help a little, but there is only so much that can be done to improve the police. I think there are three things at a play:

1) Some people will take on the position because they are bad people and want to use the added authority to their own ends.

2) Some people will take on the position because they are good people but will still fall victim to the changes power causes.

3) Some people will become jaded because dealing with criminals and jackasses all day everyday is enough to make anyone a bit cynical.

Those three things are intrinsic to human nature and the job and as a result will never be taken away completely.

which is why i am raising the question.....i'm talking if the whole persona of police changed....that's the entire premise of the thread bruh....

if they were actually focusing on serving the community instead of just arresting and detaining....

1. I currently make too much money at a job that is too comfortable laid-back to switch to a job that pays shitty and is high-stress

2. I'm not putting my life on the line every day for strangers who are unappreciative, at best - or - actively wish for my death just because I wear a badge, at worst. Plus I'd be WAY more likely to catch a hot one than the average because I'd be slow on the trigger since I'd be worried about shooting someone who I didn't absolutely have to.

3. Truth be told...I don't really give a fuck about my local community enough to want to become a cop and protect it everyday

This is an interesting thread. I majored in Criminal Justice and there is a concept called "Community Policing". Basically during the civil rights movement Black leaders protested that the criminal justice system was run by whites and that was unjust and unfair. Their perspective made perfect sense so an era of community policing began.

The purpose of community policing is to have the criminal justice system run by people within the community. From neighborhood watch programs to the actual cop walking the beat the idea of community policing was that the community would have more say in the organization and execution of police tactics.

The problem is that Black people/African Americans have a very cynical, distrustful opinion of the police, especially Black males. So Black males weren't applying for jobs in policing. Black boys, generally, don't admire police officers. Black boys don't grow up wanting to be police officers.

The Community Policing era started in the early 70s. It was supposed to be a nationwide reform of the way urban areas were policed. But its been a dismal failure; the drugs have gotten worse, the dropout rate in the inner city has skyrocketed therefore making members of the Black community ineligible to be police officers (or anything else).

Back in the 60s and 70s our Black leaders had the perfect solution; more involvement in the way our communities are policed. But the youth fucked everything up. They drop out of school to be drug dealers and end up in jail. And there's really nobody to blame but ourselves.

In theory you could get a degree in criminal justice and get a job as a police officer. Then, you could go to law school from there and be a lawyer. But for some reason our Black youth want to drop out of school and be drug dealers, or rappers.

I'm not putting my life on the line for strangers. However, I will support individuals who feel like doing so. Being a cop is a paradox, its both hard and easy. Its easy because most cops don't do shit all day but its hard because you never know when some shit is going to jump off. A regular traffic stop can turn into some real bullshit very quickly and its not predictable.

Not only that but cops have to put themselves in situations to break up fights, see dead or molested children, the public is largely unappreciative. I get grey hair just thinking about it. So naw, I ain't doing that shit.

this is essentially what i was getting at.. people keep overlooking the fact that this thread is suggesting that the current system has been eradicated and we are moving forward with our own system.....

i don't have the legal background to put into exact words like this post did, but i'm basically trying to ask if people would assist in rebuilding a police force that is focused and centralized to the needs of the community....

old laws, old customs, old policing tactics are not on the table anymore.. this is a new community thing, would people sign up?
