Bootlegs was hot LONG before I Am came out. Especially in NYC.

Not really. Mixtapes were hot and they were making mix tapes on CD as early as 1997.

But I Am and Murder Musik were the first ALBUMS that got bootlegged so heavily ON CD that they had to re-record the albums. Between mp3s and file sharing those albums were out several months before their official release date.
