My personal thoughts: People loved Goku as a child in Dragonball and might have missed his childish innocense in Dragonball Z, so they recreated him in Goten. Also, why they turned him back into a kid again at the start of GT.

the only question i have is what was impact and purpose in dragon ball z?

cause it looks like once the fusion plan with Kid Trunks failed, he became even less important while Trunks actually had more screentime going further til the half way point of dragon ball GT
