Cats like Mac Dre, Big L and Soulja Slim were mostly regional legends. Pun was popular before he died but he wasn't the top dude in the game or anything I would say he was on Fabolous level of popularity when he died. Pac and Big were the two biggest names at the times of their death and with these revisionist historians you would swear neither Pac or Big were nothing more than underground little known rappers that got shot then became "goat". How I remember it they were both already considered the greatest of all time when they were alive. their death played a part of course.

^^the bolded is exactly right.... i see what ur sayin about mac dre, soulja slim, etc... but even after their death its not like they started ridin to mac dre in florida or new york... he was still just that rapper in the bay... same with slim. (even though slim already had love around the south) so my point was that nothin changed

pac and big were huge name stars
but local rappers like dre, slim, blade icewood, and to and extent proof, mainly get bigger recognition after they died rather alive

mac dre was a local motherfucker to the tee and niggas over there loved him but outside of the bay area, hyphy shit, he was and still is a nobody
slim got on amin stream wise but was nothing comparable to the majority of that no limit roster from p.millar, to snoop, to mystical and such

i even heard a nigga say dolla was a top ten rapper after he died, not of all time, but like weeks after he died saying he could have been up there with em if he lived..i shook my head and kept moving

What the hell are you talkin about???? let's see here

Pac and Biggie - u musta been livin on mars to say these 2 weren't the most popular in rap when they were alive... the whole rap world revolved around them back then

Mac Dre - the bay had been ridin with him

Soulja Slim - ask anyone from new orleans if he wasn't the rap king of the streets b4 he died

Pun n Big L - NYC help me out but I'm pretty sure yall had been ridin for these dudes.... pun was gettin praise in the mw already so i know yall had to be holdin him down

jam master jay - r we even gonna go there

aliyah - was the queen of r&b

so what am i missin here??? who got popular just because they were killed????

As far as Big & Pac, for me, it just seemed like they became GOAT once they stop breathing. I'm from Brooklyn too, and there was no "Big is the GOAT" talk until after he died. I remember the exact moment (MTV interview), and the 1st person to say it (Diddy), and I immediately gave that nigga the "c'mon son" look like I understand you hurt, and you wanna pay respects to the dude, but you reachin son. Same thing wit' Pac. I do not remember nobody (including Shock G, Treach, or Money B) saying that nigga was the GOAT when he was breathing. Sure he was known as a real dude, definitley not a fake industry nigga, nice with the pen, but greatest rapper ever?? I mean it's almost like if you say "damn he was a good/great artist" once these people die, that isn't enough.

Think of this...Would Michael Jackson be considered the greatest entertainer ever (as he is now, and was before he actually died) if he died two months before I'll Be There (Jackson 5's The Third Album) came out? Why not? They had 4 straight number one hits. He had stage presence, and was able to sing.

Only whack niggas who don't know real music say some dumb shit like that, Biggie and Pac were living legends and when they died they still remained legends real niggas know.

just because somebody is a "regional" legend, does that not make them a legend? yall keep throwin that tag around like it diminishes what ever somebody laid down, if you did it all out ya own pocket and laid down a independent hustle in this rap game and didn't look to a major to spoon feed you, and still be able to make a name for yaself in this game for over a decade, does being "regional" take away from what you did?

Niggas get crowned "best rapper alive" with 1 multi-plat, and a buncha mixtapes. Never mind that 85% of they whole catalogue is average at best. (Insert Rapper Name) said a hot line on this mixtape and he's the greatest to ever do it. "All them old heads who did it in the 90's, nobody wanna listen to them, they washed up".

And it's a shame on hip hop, that if (for example) Lil' Wayne was to (god forbid)... say, OD on syrup celebrating the night after he steps outta the cage, this is what it'll be like.

1. Immediate shock. He was too young to die/ the good die young, etc. Totally forgettin' the nigga was always walkin' around with a styrofoam cup talking about how much he loves lean.

2. Baby does interview a few days later proclaiming Wayne the best that ever do it. Better than Big, Pac, Jay-Z, Scarface, and everyone in the history of rap, because "he was my son and he made the bestest music, and had the mostest money".

3. 85% of hip hop (so-called) fans would agree with the above statement.

4. Anyone who disagrees with 2 or 3 is deemed a hater.

5. Tribute song We'll Always Miss You 2010 (auto-tuned) by Drake, featuring Nicki Minaj, & Kanye West. Produced by Diddy (I know he'll find a way to profit off of a rapper's death) with Wayne himself on the Young Money remix.

6. Market floods with loads of unreleased mediocre/average material, recycled verses (used for the remixes), and the (so-called) fans eat it up. After all, he would be the most recently deceased and therefore, the greatest to ever do it.

Like Chris Rock, "we always gotta make shit bigger than what it is. Tupac Shakur, and Biggie Smalls, assassinated. Struck down by assassin's bullets. No dey wasn't"
