Why do people listen to mainstream rap in 2015?

Here's a story;

The woman that lived downstairs from me was moving out a few months ago. She had a computer that she was throwing away. At the time my computer had a virus so I asked if I could have it. She said, "yeah" and gave it to me for free.

So I hooked the computer up and there's 706 songs on the iTunes playlist. Apparently it was her daughter's computer (it says, 'Felicia's Playlist'). So keep in mind, I'm 41 years old. I grew up on Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, Public Enemy and NWA. So I look at her iTunes playlist and its songs by Ace Hood, 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne, Meek Mills, Nicki Minaj and a bunch of people I would never ordinarily listen to.

I see it as a blessing in disguise. I really think that God put that computer in my life so I could catch up to what everybody else is listening to. Because there's no way in hell I'm going to the store to buy 2Chainz album and even if I were to download them I wouldn't know what songs to look for. So this computer is my lifeline to modern music and/or modern rap.

I'm going to make a few random playlists and burn them to CD, then listen to the CDs in my living room.

Not to mention the rappers that will walk a tight rope in hopes to gain notoriety.

Alot of IC rappers post on the board

Anything that doesn't compliment this current standard they talk down on it

for fear rap might go back to substance that doesn't benefit what they are doing

they wanna hide behind the success front before they have obtained it

then call out more lyrical rappers for doing similar things

1 way or another this leads to a lack of authenticity and genuine talent

where we are forced to listen to marketable but non talented mcs when we use to

have marketable talented mcs

sometimes you have to help build the proper rapper's career because having a

genuine talent helps the over all momentum in the rap industry.

Even when i'm not at a party or a club and want to hear some intrpspective/deep hip hop which is what i mainly like in hip hop anyway

It will always be Eminem, B.o.B, Kid Cudi it's why Em's my fave artist and he obviously the highest selling and most mainstream artist ever

The simple factor is they have that balance of being deep and having a message but catchy at the same time

And this is simply why most people listen to mainstream hip hop if something is deep but catchy at the same time it's gonna appeal to majority of the public

All it comes down to is taste just because most share my taste as oppossed to liking the likes of Nas, Black Thought, Lupe Fiasco, Pharoah Monch, Royce, Canibus, KRS One doesn't mean our taste is superior but it's a very straight forward reason and as i said that reason comes down to catchiness

Because most people aren't hip hop heads

In my experience most people are music lovers

True Hip Hop fans imo are those who demand the complete package the lyrics, the good rapping, catchy hook, melody, good production

Those that think they are 'hop heads' just because all they like is straight up rapping, straight bars they the ones selling them self short

Why settle for something limited when u should want the whole package

b.o.b is trash,b

I've seen you mention him alot in your posts. He's doo-doo deluxe.I can't take anyone's hip hop opinion seriously if they like b.o.b but not like nas, lupe, black thought or pharaoh monch.

You don't like hip hop You like pop music.

And that's what differentiates fans who only listen to mainstream shit and hip hop heads. One group prefers pop music, and the other prefers hip hop
