according to jonathand, gucci mane should be selling platinum albums by now.

If Gucci was released from jail in 1996, signed to the equivalent of Death Row in the early 90's, and held down his whole coast in the biggest rap beef ever (against the biggest rapper on the opposite coast), then maybe this would make sense...

There goes that lapse in elementary English again. I never disputed that Pac style didn't develop. I stated that was NOT the damn supreme factor in his high sales. Stop with the damn bullshit. You know damn well his release from jail, death row/dre alliance and him holding down a whole coast during the biggest rap beef ever played the biggest factor in his sales. If classic music alone equated to sales, Illmatic would be the equivalent of the The Marshal Mathers LP (SALES-WISE).

it was a supreme factor in sales as was his production

instead of having an album with 3-4 great songs he made an album with 27 great songs...

look at it from a fans point of view or a music lovers point of view, they hear california love on the radio "wow this song is dope", they hear how do u want it, "damn i gotta cop this album"...it works like that nigga, controversy only helps an artist to some extent, if ur music is wack word will spread faster than a forrest fire....

thats how albums bomb, thats how big budget movies bomb...cuz controversy is not the basis on which you sell big numbers

he did 5 mil, jay aint, whats the big deal?

some may argue jays relationship/ marriage helps him shift numbers, some may argue big dying helped jay do numbers, some may argue jay jacking lyrics, taking credit for others works, hitting niggas with champagne bottles, working with the biggest producers, the r kelly drama as helped him shit records.... amongst a million other things

every artist has controversy, but if ur music is trash then you will not sell

firstly illmatic was Nas first album, how many rappers do huge numbers out the gate back then? even pac didnt manage that

IWW did 3 mill, off the back off Illmatic, and the help of better production and better features....

IWW is a better album than illmatic if we ar being honest as it sounds sonically better, but also has dope songs

Nas could have had all the controversy in the world, but illmatic would not have done 5 mil, simply because the overall product was not great...

I swear if Pac didn't go to jail, he wouldn't be a legend like he is, now. I'm not wishing it, but look at his album before 'Me Against the World'.

lmao at Pac being a Movie Star. No, he was an actor but far from a movie star. You know what was Pac's most successful film? Poetic Justice. You know why? Because of his co-star Janet Jackson was killing shit with her #1 single "Again" (which she won an academy award for). Now lets look at a quote from the first movie to release after tupacs death;

Gridlock'd is a 1997 film starring Tupac Shakur, Tim Roth, and Thandie Newton. It was the directorial debut of Vondie Curtis-Hall, who also wrote the story and screenplay. The film's opening was relatively low, despite critical acclaim; its opening weekend netted only $2,678,372 and it finished with a little over $5.5 million.[1] The film paid tribute to star Tupac Shakur, who had been murdered several months before the film's release.

Movie star my ass...
