I consider myself to an extent a Hip-Hop Purist so I can vividly remember Rappers Delight, The Breaks, Planet Rock, etc. and yes AT THAT TIME the records were "party records" b/c of that particular era ( late 70's-early 80's "disco" era) so as years past Hip-Hop evolves. It evolved from NY to all over the US, evolution of various genres (political, lyrical, gangsta, etc.) so it's a gift and curse to evolve (get to that in a min) as an artist.
The cities we call home are all grouped into different regions HOWEVER what most fail to understand/realize is that WE ALL MAYBE IN THE SAME REGION BUT EACH CITY STANDS OUT ON ITS OWN. NY and Philly are totally different for obvious reasons, DC and B-More vice versa. Venture down south and a ATL cat and a MIA cat are totally different.
The Southern culture is night and day in contrast to the East Coast culture. Southern cities are considered more friendly, cost of living is lower, vibe is more laid-back/conservative (most will say slow), and lastly have a huge deep rooted culture in Strip Clubs. With all being said the Southern way of life is "paryting" so that's what you're more likely to hear.
The East Coast culture is aggressive, fast-paced, more hostile/less friendly so it's not a slight to any other region here in the BIG EAST that's how it is.
When Hip-Hop was still pure and less corporately tainted yeah East Coast artists were guilty of party records as well so EVERYONE'S BEEN GUILTY OF BUBBLE GUM RAP.
This is what it all boils down too...there is A CERTAIN DEMAND from NYers because Lyrical Skill/Lyricism is your end all be all. I'm guilty of pigeonholing myself into this category b/c I hold myself to that same standard. I'm not a party dude or club-goer so I automatically know full well that this isn't the kind of music I'll even entertain listening too. To the East Coast resident the litmus test is the song getting radio spins whereas in the South their litmus test is the song getting played in the Strip Clubs. The obvious differences maybe due to unawareness or pure ignorance but pretty much IMHO there you have it.
