On their first offensive play, Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey) was very close to scoring a touchdown as Jabrill Peppers’ long halfback pass was just out of Leonte Carroo’s reach. It would prove a minor inconvenience for an offense that wouldn’t throw another incompletion until there were three minutes left in the first half.

With an efficient offense and a pass-rush that pressured quarterback Ryan Fallon throughout the game, the No. 1 ranked Ironmen knocked off No. 5 St. Edward (Lakewood) by a score of 38-7.

“I think we hit on all cylinders and I think they were a little flat,” Don Bosco head coach Greg Toal said.

Don Bosco (5-0) got off to a quick start. On their first possession, Ironmen quarterback Mike Yankovich connected three times through the air with the Rutgers-bound Carroo. Peppers capped the drive with a leap over the defensive line from a yard out to make it 7-0.

On Don Bosco’s second drive, they marched down the field again. Yankovich had long pass plays to Kyle Sakowski and Elijah Shumate, who then doubled the Ironmen’s lead with a nine-yard touchdown run. Yankovich was in a rhythm in the first quarter, completing all seven of his passes for 100 yards.

“I think the game plan was really good,” Yankovich said. “We did kind of the same stuff last week where we came out and got a few quick passes under my belt and made me feel comfortable.”

In the second quarter, Don Bosco’s defense took the game over with a couple of big plays. First the defensive front, which features five-star recruit Darius Hamilton, scored on a 40-yard fumble return by Michael Strizak. It was a fitting way to score for a unit the generated four sacks.

“I thought our front eight did a great job of stuffing the run and eventually that made them one dimensional,” Toal said. “When they are one dimensional we can get after the passer a little bit and that really helped us.

After St. Edward (6-1) answered with a touchdown, Bosco benefitted from another critical turnover to essentially put the game out of reach. Peppers ran an interception back to the two-yard line and scored two plays later, which made the score 28-7 heading into the half. It was the second of his three touchdowns.

For another week, Don Bosco will remain the number one team in the USA Today Super 25 rankings. The Ironmen’s balance impressed their opponents.

“The one thing is that they’re just good across the board,” St. Edward coach Rick Finotti said.

The game was the nightcap at the Halloy Boy State Pride Challenge, which pitted three New Jersey teams against out of state opponents. It was a clean sweep for the New Jersey teams as Bergen Catholic (Bergen) defeated Friendship Collegiate (D.C) 48-32 and St. Peter’s Prep (Jersey City) outlasted Ursuline (Youngstown) 31-21.
