Whitlock: Tebow is NFL's Magic Johnson + he benefits from growing up w/ both parents

Despite however people may feel about Whitlock as a person, he makes a valid point. In order to be a strong leader as a man, you need to grow up with a strong father. A boy needs a father so that he can mimic behavior and as he grows he begins to understand that behavior. it's not a white vs black issue per se but it does lay out in a white vs black context because as a community we are lacking strong men, strong fathers, but we're still turning out babies. I've worked with a lot of kids, teenagers in particular, who don't have a strong faher figure in their life as opposed to ones who do. Their is a marked difference.

i've witnessed boys without strong fathers act more unruly, careless, and emotionally more immature, basically effeminate, like their mothers. they lack the discipline and marked emotional maturity which allows a man to carry himself with dignity and consider his actions. I'm not saying this to shit on Vick or Vince, but I bet if their fathers were a strong figure in their lives they would have held it together a lot better.

This also doesn't mean that a man who grows up with his father as a strong example won't mess up. However, people born in the 80's recognize that a lot of black males in these present times act soft. Leader aren't born they are made. You can't be a soft leader, gotta be some substance about you.

I am take it or leave it with Whitlock. I wasn't feeling him with the NBA Lockout, I'm glad that he was one of the few journalist who championed the cause of NCAA players getting paid, and calling out the NCAA for its basic use of free labor.

He actually has point this time around. The majority of my friends that had some form of a father figure are a lot better on in life than my friends that had 0 father figure in their lives. Now Whitlock needs to do a better job of breaking this down the reasons why though. why not use Cam Newton who did grow up with his pops? Are you telling me VY and Vick(who I swore had his pops in his life) are the only guys who didn't have a father figure that play qb in the league? And VY and Vick both had early success they just weren't consistent. And you can learn how to lead from other sources than having 2 parents in the household. You can't bring up such a deep subject then not really go into depth about the real shit of the subject.

the part about him being the magic Johnson of football makes no sense

But that's the point. I'm sure there are plenty of Black players that come from 2 parent homes that are super successful in the League. Whitlock just wants to paint the picture that Black QB's all come from broken homes and as a result they are inadequate as leaders and by extension as men. Like I said before, Mcnabb came from a 2 parent home and had plenty of success in the NFL, however, that didn't stop him from receiving unwarranted criticism. Tebow, on the other hand, has consistently received the benefit of the doubt when speaking about his inadequacies on the field.

As far as being hte Magic Johnson of Football... Magic was a ROY who won a title in his 1st season by playing Center and going bezerk with a triple double in the final game. When Tebow can match that type of performance in the Super Bowl this year, then the Magic comparison would make sense... but I don't see that coming.

Tebow is the first super-athletic quarterback we’ve seen who also has the discipline to prepare as if he’s Peyton Manning
WHAT!?... super-athletic and any comparison to Manning other than his lily white skin is a traveshamockery

Exactly. nothing wrong with having this opinion but you can't just loosely throw shit like this out there for public consumption. This is a deep topic that he should have fully addressed. Instead of this half ass sotry pitting whites vs black. That's all he's doing basically. Just take out Tebow and Vick and replace it with white and black.

i think it's part of the problem with today's society. We are all in such a rush taht we take headlines and never dig deeper into the subject.

Was a good read. I dunno who the fuck the author is but I imagined how this thread would go as soon as I seen Vick's name.

The feelings got swept in this bitch like a tsunami.

He's a 236 pound QB.

He runs like a fullback. That's not athletic? And why exactly is his preparation comparison a mockery?

Correction hes a 236 lb full back who throws like a Qb sometimes.. there is more to athleticism than physical attributes.. and just mentioning Mannings name

Dude was somewhat wrong but you can't downplay a triple double with 42 points while playing the 1,2 and 3. Byrd was rookie of the year that year also.
