Alleged Driver In C’Ville Car Attack Had ‘Fascination With Nazism,’ Teacher Says

A former teacher of James Alex Fields, Jr., the man accused of ramming a car into a group of protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Sunday said Fields had a “fascination with Nazism.”

“It was obvious that he had this fascination with Nazism and a big idolatry of Adolf Hitler,” Derek Weimer, who said he taught Fields history in high school, told the Washington Post on Sunday.

Weimer told the Washington Post that Fields conducted a research project into the Nazi military during World War II which he described as a “big lovefest for the German military and the Waffen-SS.”

“He had white supremacist views,” Weimer said. “He really believed in that stuff.”

Fields was charged with second-degree murder and other counts on Saturday after a car plowed into protesters at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville. A 32-year-old woman was killed in the car attack and dozens of people were injured.

What We Know About The Man Accused Of Ramming Car Into C’Ville Protesters

More and more details are coming about James Alex Fields, Jr., the man charged Saturday with second-degree murder and other counts after a car plowed into protesters at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, killing one woman and injuring dozens more.

Fields, a 20-year-old, grew up in Kentucky and recently moved to Maumee, Ohio.

The New York Daily News reported that a photographer captured Fields at a rally in the morning holding a black shield with a white insignia of two axes with bundles of rods, or fasces.

The Associated Press also published a photo of Fields with the group.

White supremacist group Vanguard America touted the insignia in a tweet Saturday afternoon, but later claimed the driver was “in no way” a member of the group.

BuzzFeed reported that a Facebook page appearing to belong to Fields (no longer available) included “a cover photo of soldiers with an American flag and swastikas, and a baby portrait of Adolf Hitler,” as well as Pepe the Frog, a cartoon character that white nationalists and internet trolls appropriated last year.

Derek Weimer, who said he taught Fields history in high school, told the Washington Post on Sunday that Fields wrote a research paper Weimer described as a “big lovefest for the German military and the Waffen-SS.”

“It was obvious that he had this fascination with Nazism and a big idolatry of Adolf Hitler,” Weimer said. “He had white supremacist views.”

Fields’ mother Samantha Bloom told the Associated Press in an interview Saturday night that she was not aware her son was attending a white supremacist rally.

“I just knew he was going to a rally,” she said. “I didn’t know it was white supremacists. I thought it had something to do with Trump.”

Bloom said she tried to “stay out” of Fields’ “political views.”

“I don’t really get too involved,” she said. “I mean, he had an African-American friend.”

I remember there was a time when people would make racist, hateful comments online, generally they would get dismissed as merely trolls, or young dumb kids. People would say "ignore them" or "they're no big deal", "just a few weirdos w/ a computer".

Thing is, all those avatars and profile pictures are real citizens that walk among us. Teachers, professors, cashiers, folks that prepare your food, folks that decide whether or not you're approved for that loan, etc.

I've said the bolded for years.

When this is over and no one is talking about it in a few weeks the ones who didn't get exposed will go right back to working their jobs and living their daily lives amongst us.

One of the main reasons I meet most Whites with skepticism. Many will arm chair quarterback issues like pro athletes not standing for the national anthem, police brutality, and other issues but are dead silent about yesterday.

Sheriff Clarke Lauds ‘Very Presidential’ Statement On White Nationalist Rally

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, one of the nation’s most controversial law enforcement officials, on Saturday praised President Donald Trump for not taking “sides” in his response to violence at a white nationalist rally.

Clarke said he was “proud” of Trump’s statement, in which the President did not condemn white supremacy.

James Alex Fields, Jr. was charged on Saturday with second-degree murder and other counts after he rammed a car into a crowd of protesters, killing a 32-year-old woman and injuring dozens of people.

Trump on Saturday did not condemn white supremacy in his response to the violence. He instead called the clashes an “egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides.”

Protests broke out in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014 after a white police officer shot and killed Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager.

Clarke has run into legal trouble for his own tenure in law enforcement and the way he has run the prisons in Milwaukee County. In May, a jury recommended charges against seven jail officials after an inmate died of dehydration when the officials cut off his access to water. Another inmate sued Clarke in March for keeping her shackled during childbirth in 2013.

The Associated Press reported in March that four people died in the jail run by Clarke last year, including one newborn child.
