How about Outkast, they never boxed themselves in, each album sold more than the previous one, they dropped numerous classics, and can be classified as the first alternative rap group.

As far as Pac goes, don't remember dude being as popular as Biggie, SNoop, etc prior to him going to jail. It wasn't until he hitched himself to Death Row, death and all the controversy that he really became big like that.

i gotta disagree on that statement...

50 Cent. This guy had the entire hip-hop industry on his shit when he first dropped. His reign was more dominant than Pac's because hip hop was more mainstream and public in the 2000s. Everyone was listening to 50, not just hip hop fans. He had shoes, clothing, movies, videogames and countless other things going on at the time. Not to mention all the beefs he was involved with. Like it or not, the man pretty much ran hip-hop in his prime.

School Him. They were plenty of acts way before that could be classified as alternative. De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers, ATCQ, Arrested Development, Digable Planets are definitely the not forgettable names to remember, even though Outkast had the greatest commercial success.

As far as a "G.O.D." MC (or Greatest on Delivery, I call it), not having the most commercial success, but more in terms of consistency would have to be Rakim from 86-92(7 years). That's just my opinion

i see somebody else knows they history, respect.

i can dig your statement... but i think A TRIBE CALLED QUEST had just as much success as outkast... just not as long.

It's to hard to really say cause so many MC's had a dominant reign at one time or the other. Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, B.I.G, Pac, Em, Jay, Ice Cube, DMX, hell even wack-ass Hammer had his time. As far as groups go Wu-Tang and NWA had their time too along with others mentioned above.

Until rapper game, jadakiss and others put him in his place and stopped him for good.

Eminem.
1999-2005:

1999: Slim Shady LP (classic)
2000: Marshall Mathers LP (10x's plat.)
2001-2002: 8 mile, the 8 mile sound track . The Eminem Show .
2003: Em introduced us to 50 cent & G-Unit. "Get Rich Or Die Trying" .
2004-2005: Encore

We have to give Em his props for roaring into the game.

I'd also say DMX in the late 90's.
The "Takeover" Jay-Z was coo.
The "Best Rapper Alive" Lil Wayne is epically misjudged as overrated .
I'll always respect 50 for his classic "Get Rich" album .. Nobody was getting more spins the Fif

But the only thing is .. Carter 2 is his only great album in his come up.

Carter was straight .. Carter 3 was an epic fail.
