I think the Rap/R&B collabs started with Slick Rick & Al B Sure if I'm not mistaken

I know Rakim and Jodely Whatley did one of the first r and b/hiphop collabo. As for the r and b hooks, i would have to think about that one, might be Puff or Teddy Riley, they started that rap and r and b mix up.

rapping the verses, and throwing an RnB singer on the hook. I know this has been around for a while I just always wonder where it started

Run DMC made "walk this way" back in the early 80's and had Aerosmith on the hook....not r&b but one of the first i rembember with the rapping and then singing for the hook..

I think it started in the reverse; R&B used rappers for a verse then it evolved to the other way around. I would say New Jack Swing really kicked it off.

The big difference between back then and nowadays......Nowadays follow the trend to sell the record.

Back then dont.......do it for a good record.

This been happening since the eighties but the way tracks are done now and how hip hop and R & B are mixed started with Bad Boy in the mid nineties with those remixes Puff did. Come to think of it Father MC did the same sh*t in the early nineties, but Puff 'perfected' it a few years later.

And it's not a trend. Riley's New Jack Swing lasted from 1988-1993 and in 1992 showed signs of evolving through Puff into Hip Hop Soul, which still exists today.

Mary J Blidge
Jodeci
TLC
Aaliyah
94 & 95 Brandy
Monica
Total
112
Ginuwine
Ashanti
Kiesha Cole
Jazmine Sullivan

Hip Hop Soul Producers (Formerly Puffy, Teddy Riley, Timbaland, Dallas Austin & Missy Elliot still does it.)

Bad Boy was a Rap, R&B and Hip Hop Soul Label from 1993-1998, and a Urban and Pop Label (1997-Present)

Murder Inc. followed in their footsteps.

Puff discovered and produced Father MC's work at Uptown in 1990. That Mase & Loon smooth rap was nothing new. That's one of the reasons why Puff and Fabolous get along so well.

Father MC was a mainstream version of Big Daddy Kane
