When did it become a bad thing to have "nappy" hair?

blacks have been taught and conditioned to believe that we swung from trees and had no history and served no purpose until white folks enslaved us and brought us to america to build their nation. its sad how much the average black person child or adult can tell you about george washington (slaveholder) and how little they can tell you about imhotep (father of architecture). this society has drilled hate so deep into our dna that our womenspend millions burning their scalp and damaging their bodies to get white folks hair

It was never a bad thing, and it still isn't.

In reality, no. But it is perceived as bad, and I wanna know why, because my hair naturally grows in tight curls ( which has now been dubbed as "nappy"). Does that mean I was born defective? Are my innate traits really less desirable in the eyes of the world?

And if thats the case, then how am I suppose to believe I am equal to men of other races if I am expected to imitate them to be accepted as normal and not dirty and/or dangerous? Are my race's attributes really bad?

If africans were never enslaved, beaten, and robbed of their language and culture by europeans, the africans of today wouldnt be trying so hard to look like their european oppressors.

I accept nothing other than a natural black woman. Fade, dreads, fro...or if your shit grow out your head straight you aite.

y'all do realize that curly, wavy and even straight hair is not exclusive to white people right? and since race really doesn't exist on a biological level, our physical differences are really due to individual variations. that being said, africans have the most genetic diversity of any population on earth meaning africans vary greatly in their appearance.

every skin colour and tone, every hair type and texture, every face shape already exists naturally amongst africans. so i don't think emulating curly or wavy hair or whatever means you want to be white. africans/black people don't all look one way

This thread was bound to turn into white VS. black, but that isn't the basis to my argument.

A Japanese man could let his hair grow an inch or 2, and walk in a job interview w/o concern.

Same with a Korean man.

Puerto Rican.

Irish.

Mexican.

Italian.

Indian.

But what about say...... a Nigerian?

Its visually unappealing in comparison to wavy, curly, or straight hair.

But "natural" hair is not necessarily "nappy" hair

You sound so retarded & still talking this same shit.

I joined this board August 2010 (2 years ago) & you were still talking sh*t about black women. What is with you?No one is knocking you for what you like, but it's clear you have an agenda. You have to shout from the mountain tops about what you don't like.Who does that?Is this what you talk about with your friends?Do you have any friends?Did you get picked on for your African features when you were little?Get over it.

Did I hurt your feelings?

Just because I typed out exactly what you do means I'm in my feelings?Okay,Lol.You must not like that reflection of yourself?& No you did not.No one,let alone a socially awkward loser, is going to hurt my feelings about something as minute as hair. This whole "high & mighty, I'm so above black girls even though I'm black myself," thing is who you are.It defines you.I don't expect anything else.

Nigerian hair doesnt look like those other ethnic group's hair. Since its different, you have to do different things to make it "presentable".

The definition of presentable is obviously subjective but it still exists.

You can complain all day about something not being fair, but in real life, if you go on an interview in a corporate setting and your hair is percieved to be unkempt you wont get the job.

Again, this thread isn't about personal preference. A person's attractiveness is subjective.

my natural hair is bushy and curly, all I have to do is use a flat iron or comb and it can get as straight as a white girl.

anyone can have nappy hair thats my opinion, nappy hair isnt a "black thing" .. I got a perm because I thought my hair would be easier to keep maintence but it wasn't... I rather use a iron or comb when I want my hair straight, because I don't wear it straight all the time. & sometimes I wear weaves.

You're angry because I hurt your feelings.

Obviously you fit the criteria of what I personally dont find attractive, and you must have experienced rejection in your life based on your looks.

So to save face, you randomly lash out at me because you see me as a representative of what youre bitter about, throwing all types of false accusations to make yourself feel better.

do you really think that nigerians or even any of the people you've listed all have one and only one hair type and texture per their ethnic group?

my sisters and i all have different hair textures, we're african, but even in our family we don't all have the same hair. i've met white people with kinkier/curlier hair than me, like i knew this redheaded white guy who could totally grow an afro if he wanted. i couldn't grow an afro if my life depended on it, because i just don't have that hair texture/type, does that make me less african?

C'mon man....... I feel like by now yall should know I'm not stupid... Of course all Africans don't have the same hair texture. Don't play me.

And you're getting away from the topic. I asked why is "nappy" hair looked at in a negative light (why was it given a derogatory term?). I have no idea what point you're trying to make in reference to that, I'm sorry.
