Bout to start a grad program in public policy.

In a nutshell, I want to study the changing policy options for peripheral states in the increasingly multipolar global order.

Sociology fuckin sucks, I took it as a gen ed course...You talk about stupid shit, like social norms and taboos...You can pass purely off common sense.

thats what i like about majors like sociology or philosophy or whatever goes in that direction you need common sense/intelligence. my major is basically business and all you have to do is learn stuff from books by heart and write it down in the exam then you get the best grade.

they might as well hand out the phone book of cincinatti and say learn it by heart, would make as much sense. even a trained ape could do it. i have so many fools in my college that dont have any common sense and all they do is repeating what's written in the book.

my major was and still is english (moreso literature really), and I'm working on my masters. I might go ahead and teach film and literature. I pretty much like everything from history to philosophy (maybe my favorite) and english is good way to channel all of that. plus its one of very few things that I'm actually good at in life...

Wouldn't that be a good thing? Especially if said person had common sense?

kind of reminds me of math. I've heard that once you know the formulas, you can just plug in the variables and do the math. But still, even though majors like sociology and philosophy encourage critical thinking and sense, they doesnt have the luxury of having "absolute" rights and wrongs like math and science do, so people can make up shit. I've also noticed that those in the STEM fields don't do too well in Humanities courses and those in the Humanities don't do too well in the STEM courses. I know that's true with me because I hate math and science even though I respect them.

But it seems that America and American universities are cutting down on the Humanities and emphasizing the STEM fields. My own program got cut a year after I joined it, but fortunately I'll be able to finish before it's completely cut. Still sucks though. America is heading towards a future aimed towards math and science, and that's where the money is anyways, right? And how else are we going to catch up to China right...

I think for the STEM fields you need intelligence as well as for humanities but its a different type of intelligence that happens to be to some degree mutually exclusive. but in courses like business, communications etc you dont really need intelligence like that, just reproduce the content of the lecture or the textbook, thats what i hate about my major (international management).

i can understand the government's motivation cutting them because they dont produce numerable results. when harriet beecher stowe wrote uncle tom's cabin the economical impact was little but when a computer nerd starts his own company he might have a dozen of employees and a respectable turnover 2-3 years later so the government feels like the latter is more important. they neglect the fact that a book like uncle tom's cabin is attributed to be influential for the civil war that ended slavery. so the government's policy is a very short term one that only focuses on economical but not societal progress.
