I've seen one of my home girls who is Dominican damn near fight somebody, ironically someone from Texas, for trying to repeatedly tell her she's not black when I was in school.

That is also part of this issue that I don't really see addressed often when black americans wonder why black foreigners are so confused about race in this country. I've seen Caribbean folks from all over be told they weren't "really black" before by black Americans which is the dumbest shit ever. I've seen black Americans say they didn't even know black latinos existed and this is in 2015 when you can google any damn thing you want. So yeah the ignorance is heavy on BOTH sides.

What I'm learning is that some Dominicans associate blackness to "African American" culture & since they don't directly identify with that, they aren't "black". They identify with their nationality moreso the color of their skin.

And the ones who don't claim their blackness or African roots are the ones that seem to not fuck with black people at all.

This is true too. To most people the term black means black Americans and some black Americans don't help this idea by telling black foreigners they aren't really black just because they aren't from America.

I went to a High School with west Indians and Haitians, and because of my African name, they put me in a bilingual Haitian class. I'm African American. They were talking that shit about African (Black) Americans like we were the lowest of the low. I had to bark on the entire class. I think many African Americans just feel like other blacks don't respect them or their struggles in the greatest racist society that has ever existed. We didn't learn about black populations in Brazil growing up, and only knew about west Indians whom seemed to be more concerned with being West Indian than being black. Unfortunately, the stereotypes of African immigrants did and does exist. At the end of the day, the common denominator is white supremacy and black oppression.

The root of it is that Black Americans have this convoluted habit of equating "Black" and "African-American" .

"African-American" is a useless,seneless, bullshit stupid retarded term that needs to be killed, buried, dug-up, and then killed again.

Blacks in the western hemisphere need to realize that they all have identical historical ties that transcend national origin. A Black person from America has more common interests with a Black person from Jamaica then a Black person from America has with a white person from America. They have the same struggle if not worse in Brazil, in Peru, in Panama etc…the shit is the same.

In Africa they have hundreds ethnicities : Yoruba , Hausa, Fang etc

As Black Diasporics we have lost connection to our original tribes/ethnicities and cultures…so we should all identify with our "Diasporicness" more than anything. "Black Diasporic" is our true modern-day ethnicity.

Dominicans are a different story…they got their own fucked up history and identity.
