That is also part of this issue that I don't really see addressed often when black americans wonder why black foreigners are so confused about race in this country. I've seen Caribbean folks from all over be told they weren't "really black" before by black Americans which is the dumbest shit ever. I've seen black Americans say they didn't even know black latinos existed and this is in 2015 when you can google any damn thing you want. So yeah the ignorance is heavy on BOTH sides.

What I'm learning is that some Dominicans associate blackness to "African American" culture & since they don't directly identify with that, they aren't "black". They identify with their nationality moreso the color of their skin.

And the ones who don't claim their blackness or African roots are the ones that seem to not fuck with black people at all.

This is true too. To most people the term black means black Americans and some black Americans don't help this idea by telling black foreigners they aren't really black just because they aren't from America.

That's not one sided. Both cultures have years of misunderstanding each other. I know plenty of Black Latinos that have been told by Black Americans that they are not a real Black person. On the flip I know plenty of Black Latinos that embrace their African roots. Meaning the traditions, meals even aspects of religion. BUT it's like mentioned in here the word Black has been pigeon holed to mean Black American.
