We all know Dominicans, like the rest of the free world, got issues with race. Their shit is just alot more in your face than other places are. That shit been ingrained in some of those families for hundreds of years that anything dark/black is bad. I know some Dominicans who are 1st generation in the states who get into serious arguments w/ their families about being black. Shit runs deep to them. Those that embrace it do it to the fullest. I've seen one of my home girls who is Dominican damn near fight somebody, ironically someone from Texas, for trying to repeatedly tell her she's not black when I was in school.

Yankees stay doing that to black immigrants. Then later on in life it's "y y'all act like u aren't black like us, u think u r better?"

Or worse

They still think the same as they were in high school, smh

That is also part of this issue that I don't really see addressed often when black americans wonder why black foreigners are so confused about race in this country. I've seen Caribbean folks from all over be told they weren't "really black" before by black Americans which is the dumbest shit ever. I've seen black Americans say they didn't even know black latinos existed and this is in 2015 when you can google any damn thing you want. So yeah the ignorance is heavy on BOTH sides.

What I'm learning is that some Dominicans associate blackness to "African American" culture & since they don't directly identify with that, they aren't "black". They identify with their nationality moreso the color of their skin.

And the ones who don't claim their blackness or African roots are the ones that seem to not fuck with black people at all.

This is true too. To most people the term black means black Americans and some black Americans don't help this idea by telling black foreigners they aren't really black just because they aren't from America.

I don't think this is cooning. Black latinos simply don't identify with African Americans in a lot of cases. They don't have to. They don't have to feel any loyalties towards us just like we don't have to feel that way towards them. You would think we could all come together, but all African Americans can't even see eye to eye. So why would we expect to automatically get along with another completely different group of blacks?

That's just it though. They don't necessarily see white people as the enemy. They feel like they can endear themselves to whites and other groups by throwing us under the bus. Africans do the same thing. Basically lots of members of black groups from outside of America think they can rise in America by shitting on American born Blacks

One of the problems is lack of culture.

On who's side?

On the side that be pushing that dumbass agenda. That only black Americans are black.

That's not one sided. Both cultures have years of misunderstanding each other. I know plenty of Black Latinos that have been told by Black Americans that they are not a real Black person. BR *daps* even told us a chick he dated who's mom said something to the affect he wasn't a real Black man because she saw a Panamanian flag in his whip.

On the flip I know plenty of Black Latinos that embrace their African roots. Meaning the traditions, meals even aspects of religion. BUT it's like mentioned in here the word Black has been pigeon holed to mean Black American.

Race is different in other countries and in many its not an issue at all. I dont understand why many of us American Blacks can't get that.

In places where people are split up by tribe, ethnicity, language or other markers race isnt an issue, especially if everyone is some shade of the same color.
