Rollingstone said it was Eminem

Those that follow record sales say it's Wayne

Those that are advocates of consistency will argue Jay Z and/or Kanye West

The lyric lovers will argue Nas or Lupe Fiasco

Somewhere in between, names like Ross, T.I., and/or Common will be dropped.

Now on the flipside. The IC seems to be divided or undecided because of the following:

Eminem- he shouldn't even be in the conversation because of his fanbase according to the IC

Lil' Wayne- he fell off, according to the IC

Nas- well, according to the IC, he lost

Jay Z, Kanye West- Some argue that Jay has fallen off as well and others argue that Kanye isn't that great of a rapper anyway.

Lupe Fiasco- it's argued that he sold out

Ross- the IC can't let go of his O.C. past

T.I.- according to the IC, he's not relevant enough

Common- according to the IC, he's boring

^^^ With all of this considered, who do you as individuals consider as the KING. Not necessarily the best lyricist or highest seller, but THAT artist that is all around great and best represents Hip Hop at the moment

based on YOUR CRITERIA Kanye.......

Jay the only nigga relevant through all 12 albums and 15yrs later, Wayne has only been relevant through the Carter series. As far as best throw out sales and its wide open.

Lupe Fiasco is king imo. IDGAF about lasers, he bought me 2 great albums like FNL and The Cool. But it is good to see Lupe finally get some recognition by the mainstream.

I co sign kinda forgot bout my son after lasers kinda threw me of from him a lil, but check out songs like go to sleep army girl and shining down that was suppose to be on the real lasers album. Also Kendrick lamr I think can actually keep up with lupe. My biggest current dream is for my top 3 favorite mc's Nas, Lupe, and K dot to all do a song together. My other lil dream is for Wiz to snap out of his bitchassness clean up is act by loosing his pimp and cutting off that bird shit hairstyle, and go back underground and make how fly 2 and invent a lablel ex: planes gang with spitta and start a fucking revolution on hip hop. They will sign mac miller, big krit, dom kennedy etc. and start a ymcmb or mmg movement to force the radios and lame ass media to play some good ass music

of course not, there is no way to quantify or prove who is king of hiphop because we all have different standards. All this shit is just talking points and message boards/barbershop fodder.

Canibus for the following reasons:

Always stated that lyrics matter and proved it, even when fans, his contemporaries, DJs, etc. didn't like the direction he was taking his music.

Never sold out hip-hop, even when people (fans, critics, other artists) shitted/continue to shit on his ability.

People complain about emcees like a Jay-Z for example, not replying to someone who blatantly dissed him or called him out, or being afraid to battle, yet Canibus does and it falls on deaf ears (to Beanie Sigel, LL Cool J, Eminem, Royce da 59, Joe Budden, various up and coming underground battle rappers etc.)

People complain about artists kissing ass to stay relevant (or featuring the hot artist of the moment on their tracks), Bis doesn't.

People complain about the "top tier emcees who were/are afraid of taking on Eminem" due to the potential blacklisting, Bis did it, yet no one cared.

People complain about rappers/emcees being afraid of speaking out against "legends" when they pull that bullshit, yet he called out KRS-One, and KRS has yet to reply.

I could go on and on, but most of ya'll will skip over this anyway.

It depends on how you define King status. I don't think there is one king or g.o.a.t. in rap...there are many categories to be considered and it changes from time to time.

80s Rakim, LL Cool J, Run DMC, Public Enemy
90s Ice Cube, Nas, Tupac, Biggie, Lauryn Hill
2000s Eminem, Jay-Z, Kanye
