160k and living in SF won't take you as far as most people think from other places.

Taxes and living will expenses will eat u up. It's also likely he has at least 5% of that coming off the top for a retirement plan.

3k for rent on a two bedroom house is very cheap in SF.

It's expensive to live in San Francisco — even if you make six figures.

In an article published earlier this year, The Guardian reported on an anonymous Twitter employee in his 40s who says that, even on a $160,000 annual salary, he's barely scraping by in Silicon Valley.

"I didn't become a software engineer to be trying to make ends meet," he told The Guardian.

The employee's biggest expense is the $3,000 monthly rent he pays on a two-bedroom house where he lives with his wife and two kids, which he describes as "ultra cheap."

"Families are priced out of the market," he says, explaining that it's hard to compete with the hordes of 20-somethings willing to pile into a shared house — and still pay $2,000 per person for a room.

The employee's grievances are echoed by many of his fellow tech workers in the Bay Area.

Another woman who spoke to The Guardian says that although she and her partner make a combined salary of over $1 million, they can't afford a house. "This is part of where the American dream is not working out here," she says.

San Francisco is notorious as one of the most expensive places to live in the U.S., and the booming tech industry has only exacerbated the cost of housing. The median rent price is $3,320 per month for a one-bedroom apartment and $4,430 for a two-bedroom, according to real estate site Zumper. That's more than twice as much as the median rent price for the country overall, which sits at $1,164 for a one-bedroom and $1,377 for a two-bedroom.

Engineers at prominent tech firms can expect to fork over 40 to 50 percent of their annual salaries to rent an apartment near work, according to one study cited by The Guardian.

Things are even worse in San Francisco for those outside of the most lucrative sectors. Doctors can't afford 58 percent of the homes in the city, according to a recent study by Trulia, and teachers can expect to put up to 77 percent of their income toward housing, Curbed San Francisco reports.

Dont believe these white american lies you guys. First off dude is in his 40's, that means hes most likely been doing this a long time and making good money. Second off every time a story like this is written and they show their expenses, 2 things become clear. They're living way above their means AND they consider barely getting by, if after they're finish paying all of they're expenses at the end of the year (i.e. car payment, rent, private school, vacations, credit cards, new cloths, health insurance, student loans, savings & retirement.), if they only have a few thousand left over, it cus they're broke and barely getting by. Some of you are forgetting they're regular people broke and rich people broke.

Fucking impossible.

that whole "cant afford" phrase has a different meaning depending on the person and how they're living

they dont mean they make a milli a year and cant buy A house

they mean they make a milli a year and cant buy the property that they would like, all while keeping the luxuries they've already grown accustomed to

Sorry man 160k a year. You living decent as hell in Atlanta. Maybe not buckhead or midtown nice but outside the perimeter, you living nice.

On the opposite end I remember a mfer on here talking about making 40K a year and mfer in that thread was telling him to go buy a BMW for his first car. WTF! Nigga you make 40K a year. Poor niggas making Rich decisions.

So, let's break it down...

160K/yr breaks down to a gross paycheck of 6153.85 biweekly... He's married with two children so let's look at what his net is from every paycheck:
https://www.adp.com/tools-and-resou...l-calculators/salary-paycheck-calculator.aspx

Calculated at 04/25/2017 10:48:55

Gross Pay 6153.85

Federal 932.79

Fica 381.54

Medicare 89.23

State 425.96

SDI 55.38

Net Pay 4268.95

So... Dude comes home with approx 4268.95 give or take a few dollars.

Let's see how this works out:

His rent is $3000/month, so take half of that out of each of his checks and you're left with 2768.95 every other week.

Let's say his combined utilities (Gas, electric, water, sewage, trash, phone/internet) run him $1000/month. This means he's now at $2268.95 every other week.

Food... Well... Let's take the maximum benefit guidelines for SNAP for a family of 4 in Cali: $649, and tack on an extra $100 because cali pricing for some shit is retarded which means $374.50 every other week for 4 people to eat. Now you're at $1894.45 every other week.

Because he's working for Twitter he's likely got phones with an unlimited data plan for his family. $200/month or so. Now we're at $1794.45 every other week.

I'm assuming he's got two car notes as well. Let's say... $400/month for each ride? He's now at $1394.45 every other week.

Car insurance for San Fran for two cars might set him back about $300/month. Now he's down to $1244.45 every other week.

So... With all of his bills paid, food in the crib and everything... This dude claims to be "scraping by" with about $1244.45, cash in hand left over every two weeks.

FUCK... OUTTA... HERE...

Mind you, if he was smart and bought two used cars outright instead of paying a note he'd have an extra $400 every other week in hand but the point still stands: He ain't scraping by. All his bills are taken care of AND he's still sittin on more cash in hand to fuck off with than a lot of Americans gross every two weeks.

One of you rich niggas always said it's not about how much you make but how you spend it....and a person making 100k can be living like a person making 30k

I'm guessing this is the prime example

LP is nice as hell but there's two sides to LP: there's LP proper, then there's all that unincorporated county next to it that uses LP's zipcode where you have big ass houses with big ass lots. We went to see a house out in the unincorporated area. Shit was $2000 a month for a custom 4500sq/ft house on just short of a half acre. They had rented it to a family that came to see it about an hour after we left. They jumped at that shit and wrote a check for the first month and the deposit immediately after seeing it.

Lol San Diego is killin 3k for two bedroom nope

Me and my homie was payin 1500 in rent a month for 5 bedroom 3 bathroom two story house in Ga lol wtf

This is what doesnt make sense. There are mad IT jobs in the phx area too. I stay getting job offers from jobs out there, anywhere between 90k to 130k a year. So why live in Silicon Valley if its that expensive when you can find the same jobs almost everywhere else?

What a lot of these dudes look at is bragging rights:

"Yeah, so I work for Twitter/FB/Google/random new startup out in Silicon Valley"

Which might sound cool to some, but personally I don't give a fuck. Metro Phoenix has Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, L3 Communications, GoDaddy, Boeing, Intel, American Express, DHL, and a grip of other companies that might not sound as cool, but have more stability and very pay well.

Fuck the dumb shit. Cheap housing, cheap food, good pay, hop on the I-10 to SoCal, 4-5hrs drive to Las Vegas, 3.5hrs to Rocky Pointe in Mexico, no snow in PHX but skiing is only a couple hrs away in Flagstaff...

Fuck living in Cali.

KYS

Students loans are probably kicking his ass

Cosign. My sister makes over 100K in San Diego, but the student loans for that masters degree has her living in a one bedroom bungalow. Shit is ridiculous.

If she lives in a 1 bedroom where did u sleep

The thing with "he should just move to..." is aint no point in moving to somewhere you are miserable. Just cause one person likes it there dont mean he will. The South for instance aint got legal weed or none of that. Im moving from one of the most "popular" cities cause its time for me. Still in the South though at the time but I can understand why someone would prefer Cali. At the same time its ridiculous to complain about this while making 160k. Which I think is why they made the story as an attention getter in the first place.

She made the decision to downsize after I made the decision to return to Houston. She does live close to the beach though.
