Medical records: George Zimmerman had black eyes, painful broken nose but no head trauma

A medical report conducted the day after George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin shows he went to the doctor’s office because he needed a note to return to work. The morning after he killed Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman went to a clinic with what appeared to be a broken nose, two black eyes and two cuts on the back of his head. But the physician’s assistant who treated him determined he neither needed X-rays nor had he suffered head trauma, newly released medical records show.

Zimmerman declined to go to an ear, nose and throat specialist even though it was recommended, the physician’s assistant wrote. She also suggested he see a psychologist because of what he had just gone through.

On Tuesday, Zimmerman’s defense attorney used his website to share the evidence he presented last week in court at his client’s bail hearing. He posted statements and recordings from witnesses who saw Zimmerman getting beaten, copies of his interviews with police as well as his medical record from the office visit the morning after he shot Trayvon.

Defense attorney Mark O’Mara believes the evidence demonstrates that Zimmerman received repeated blows from the unarmed teen and was in reasonable fear for his life when he shot him Feb. 26 in Sanford. He offered the documents to Seminole County Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester, who is expected to rule Thursday on whether to release Zimmerman on bail. O’Mara’s argument: Is it fair for Zimmerman to spend a year in jail before trial for a killing he may never be convicted of?

“At the June 29 bond hearing, the defense submitted a number of exhibits into evidence in an effort to demonstrate the weaknesses of the State’s case against George Zimmerman and illustrate the strength of Mr. Zimmerman’s claim of self defense,” O’Mara wrote on his site Tuesday.

The medical records document several injuries, but also state that the only reason Zimmerman sought medical attention was because he needed a doctor’s note to return to work, Duval County Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda said in court last week.

Prosecutors say Zimmerman’s injuries are not severe enough for the thrashing he claims to have endured. Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder and, if convicted, faces a possible life sentence.

De la Rionda had kept the report sealed, citing medical exemptions to public records laws.

The medical report details an overweight man who at 28 suffered from a variety of ailments including tonsil stones and irritable bowel syndrome. His mood was “appropriate,” and he showed “no acute distress.”

At 5 feet 7½ inches and 204 lbs, the physician assistant at Altamonte Family Practice described Zimmerman as “obese.” Zimmerman’s size compared to Trayvon’s has been a heated topic of discussion both in court and the blogosphere, as people on opposite sides of the controversial issue debate who had the upper hand during the altercation. Zimmerman was much shorter than the nearly six-foot Trayvon, but was 45 pounds heavier.

The report also said although Zimmerman did not have any blurry vision or dizziness, he said he got nauseous every time he thought of the night’s violence.

The report detailed two open wounds on the back of Zimmerman’s head, one two centimeters and one half a centimeter, which did not require stitches. She described his head as “normocephalic and atraumatic’’ — normal and without injuries.

His nose was fractured, hurt, and he suffered joint pain likely because of the assault, the physician’s assistant, Lindzee E. Folgate wrote. “We discussed that it is likely broken, but does not appear to have septal deviation,” the report said. “The swelling and black eyes are typical of this injury. I recommended that he be evaluated by ENT but he refused.”

His wounds were cleaned by paramedics at the scene, but he did not go to a hospital immediately after the shooting.

Zimmerman claims the Miami Gardens teenager attacked him and slammed his head on concrete. Prosecutors believe Zimmerman profiled the unarmed teenager, because he assumed Trayvon was a criminal.

The records show Zimmerman takes a variety of medications, including pills that both elevate your mood and calm it. He suffers from sacroiliitis, inflammation of the joints in the lower spine

I just don't see how someone defending this guy could not be considered racist.

How 'bout someone defending themselves against a beat down or worse someone killing you because you were to weak to defend yourself. FYI so now I'm considered a racist because I feel this guy had a right to defend himself - WOW so when the riots begin and folks starting beating up on innocent (white?) people & those who defend themselves will be considered racist - wow! great logic.

He followed him with a PISTOL...you're in denial if you believe that to not be true. It's on video. EVERYONE in here is ignoring that whole "fucking coons" comment. Yes maybe the media has talked you guys into believing its not clear enough, but its clear as day in my mind.

Everyone is piling on this kid that was murdered because some law enforcement wanna-be decided he would take law into his own hands. It's illogical for someone to argue in George Zimmerman's defense. It is illogical! So in my mind you root for Zimmerman only because you have something against black people. That's my logic.

If someone I ran up on unprovoked beats my ass, that's my L! I don't then warrant the right to MERK him! Ridiculous argument. Maybe everyone that believes Zimmerman isn't racist, but if you're not racist then you need to think about this situation about further before making your proclamation!

He got his ass whooped because he was wrongly pursuing someone who at the time was doing no wrong. That fact is not up for discussion

which is the point you seem to be missing: it's not certain that that is what he actually said. you're not even willing to accept that someone could disagree with this point without attributing it to THE MEDIA. yet this is the logical reason why it's not a source of such outrage.

keep noting the number of times you say "in my mind"

I'm gonna leave-it with how I would handle the same situation - I wouldn't carry a gun and don't really like guns. If I'm getting beat down and it comes down to either me or him & I defend myself by any means necessary & it causes the death of my aggressor, and they happen to be non-white - given your mindset that would label me a racist - BULL SHIT! U talk like that moron/i.e., former President Bush, his way or the highway type of mentality.

George Zimmerman leaves Fla. jail on $1M bond

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Neighborhood watch leader George Zimmerman was released from jail Friday for a second time while he awaits his second-degree murder trial for fatally shooting Trayvon Martin.

Zimmerman left the Seminole County Jail a day after Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester granted a $1 million bail with strict conditions.

The neighborhood watch leader is required to stay in Seminole County. He was allowed to leave Florida after his first release in April. He must be electronically monitored, can't open a bank account, obtain a passport or set foot on the grounds of the local airport. He has a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew.

"He's very happy to be out," said Don West, one of Zimmerman's attorneys. "Certainly it's been a sobering experience being in that kind of environment."

Zimmerman had been released on a $150,000 bond in April, but the judge revoked it last month after prosecutors presented evidence that he and his wife misled the court about how much money they had available to pay for the bond. They didn't tell the judge that donations from a website for Zimmerman's legal defense had raised around $135,000 at the time of his first bond hearing.

Prosecutors argued Zimmerman and his wife talked in code during recorded jailhouse conversations about how to transfer the donations to different bank accounts. For example, George Zimmerman at one point asked how much money they had. She replied "$155." Prosecutors allege that was code for $155,000. Their reference to "Peter Pan" was code for the PayPal system through which the donations were made, prosecutors said.

Shellie Zimmerman faces arraignment at the end of the month on a perjury charge; she was freed on bond.

During Zimmerman's second bond hearing, his attorney, Mark O'Mara, said that his client was confused, fearful and experienced a moment of weakness when he and his wife misled the court.

The judge didn't buy it and expressed his unhappiness with Zimmerman and his wife in his second bond order. He accused Zimmerman of making plans to flee to avoid prosecution, misleading O'Mara by not disclosing the money from the website and trying to manipulate the judicial system.

"Under any definition, the defendant has flaunted the system," Lester wrote.

But the judge said current law limited his ability to deny a second application for bond.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and claims the shooting was self-defense under the state's "stand your ground" law. Zimmerman and Martin got into a fight last February inside a gated community in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman was the neighborhood watch leader for the community and Martin was visiting his father's fiance, who lived there.

The "stand your ground" law allows individuals to use deadly force provided they are doing nothing illegal and relieves them of a duty to retreat if they believe their lives are in jeopardy. The law allows defendants to make their self-defense case at a hearing presided over by a judge and without the use of a jury. If the judge deems self-defense was justified, the case can be dismissed without going to trial.

The 44 days between the shooting and Zimmerman's arrest inspired nationwide protests, led to the departure of the Sanford, Fla. police chief and prompted a U.S. Justice Department probe.

Martin's parents and supporters claim that the unarmed teenager was targeted because he was black and that Zimmerman started the confrontation that led to the shooting. Zimmerman's father is white and his mother is Hispanic.

@janklow you listen to that tape again and explain to me how he is saying anything but "fucking coon" you are not making a good argument. Its plain as day that Zimmerman was wrong. In the court of law maybe there are discrepancies.

Nothing you said nullifies my argument. What are your reasons for believing his innocence.

@heyslick can you or can you not logically conclude from the 911 call that Zimmerman pursued Martin and created the confrontation.

@heyslick everyone isn't racist. This situation is about race. And instead of us as a whole people using logic and facts, we are allowing it to divide us! There is only one victim. He can.get off in court but we can't allow it to happen to each other out here in the world

no, the problem is that you are 100% certain that's what's said on the tape and other people are not. you're entitled to your opinion, but the part that doesn't make sense is you claiming it's "not a good argument" to not agree with you because ... i don't agree with you?

note: does him not saying "fucking coons" mean he's NOT a racist? no. but then again, Zimmerman could be 100% racist and still have justifiably shot someone.

did i say that Zimmerman was innocent or that i thought your argument had some problems?

@janklow Tell me what it is you believe he said?

Also, if you don't find him innocent what are we arguing about!?

I made the point that there is no rational way through the evidence to conclude his innocence.you gave yet to argue that.

Don't act like you didn't know about that communities string of home robberies & Zimmerman wasn't just some random dude out to kill poor little innocent black children - BULL SHIT! face the real facts and stop playing games about it. This young man didn't deserve to die, but this young man was far from an innocent little child - BTW I thought people were innocent until proven guilty & most within this site have already convicted this man -

Y do some black people have to get so emotional about issues like this and when more facts come forward - they look foolish. can you say Duke University? some within that community were making threats - e.g., hang them white boys - just image if they had happened - YELP some black folks just can't resist being idiots & claiming things like white men been raping your women for 600 years on and on --- WELL BULL SHIT and it was proven and the lying bitch made up the entire story.
