Crime photos, autopsy to be released in Trayvon Martin case

Florida Judge Kenneth Lester has ordered the release of more material in the Trayvon Martin case, including crime scene photos, an autopsy report and tests conducted on George Zimmerman, who is charged with second-degree murder in the killing of the unarmed teenager.

Lester ordered the material released within 15 days, USA TODAY's Yamiche Alcindor reports.

The judge, however, ruled that the names of the witnesses in the case will be withheld, along with photos of the teen's body.

Also being released:

Zimmerman's statements to police

Zimmerman's calls to 911 and the Sanford, Fla., police

Comments by "Witness Nine"

E-mails to Sanford police about the case

E-mails from witnesses to Sanford police, with their names redacted.

Transcripts of Zimmerman's jailhouse calls

Zimmerman, 28, remains in jail, where he was taken after his bond was revoked.

Earlier this month, the judge ruled that Zimmerman and his wife, Shellie, had lied about how much money they had during an earlier bond hearing.

Shellie Zimmerman was arrested and charged with perjury in connection with her statements on the family's finances.

Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, has claimed that he shot 17-year-old Trayvon in self-defense in February in a gated community in Sanford.

Bill Lee, Sanford Police Chief Criticized For Mishandling Trayvon Martin Case, Fired

The police chief at the center of the Trayvon Martin shooting case has been fired, according to sources who spoke with FOX 35. A spokesperson confirmed the news to CNN.

Police Chief Bill Lee was Sanford's top law enforcement official when George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin in February. Lee has been under fire for months for his department's handling of the case.

Lee submitted a resignation letter in April, but it was not accepted, and he has remained on administrative leave ever since.

Richard Myers, a former chief of police in Colorado Springs, Colo., has been serving as the town's top cop in the interim.

According to FOX 35, an official announcement is expected Thursday.

George Zimmerman's Callous 'Hoodie' Comment

Washington Post columnist Jonathan Capehart says that a joke recorded in a jailhouse phone call between Trayvon Martin's shooter and his wife crosses a line by making light of the item of clothing that's come to represent the unarmed teen's death.

When Shellie advises that he "could always lay down or something" to hide from onlookers, Zimmerman said, "Yeah, exactly. Well, I have my hoodie." And then you hear what sounds like an exhaled laugh. You can hear the exchange starting at about 12 minutes and 35 seconds into the call.

Words cannot even express how disgusting this is. An unarmed Trayvon was wearing a hoodie when he was shot and killed by Zimmerman on Feb. 26. That the neighborhood watch volunteer could even say "hoodie" is beyond callous.

But I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. From the very beginning of this tragedy Zimmerman has shown poor judgment. He followed Trayvon even though he was told not to by a police dispatcher. He plotted with his wife to hide how much money they really had -- while talking on phone lines they knew were being recorded by the police. This resulted in Zimmerman's bail being revoked and his wife being arrested for perjury. And it was during one of these scheming phone calls that Zimmerman invoked his "hoodie" levity. Shooting from the lip is never a good idea when you're accused of murder.

tangent: i don't even understand the point of that remark. whenever someone says it, they IMMEDIATELY follow it with a lot of words. what's the point if you're talking about something that cannot be expressed in words?

that shit seems like bullshit, who the hell remembers exactly where they were and what the other guy said when you get your head slammed into the concrete? If i was in a fight getting my brains bashed i would be 100 percent focused on ripping the other guys head off, not where i'm at or what the other guy says.

I just don't see how someone defending this guy could not be considered racist.

How 'bout someone defending themselves against a beat down or worse someone killing you because you were to weak to defend yourself. FYI so now I'm considered a racist because I feel this guy had a right to defend himself - WOW so when the riots begin and folks starting beating up on innocent (white?) people & those who defend themselves will be considered racist - wow! great logic.

I'm watching this shit too. Defense better have an ace up their sleeve. All they are saying is zimmerman got beat up real good. Nobody is saying that a fight didn't take place. They should be more worried about proving that zimmerman didn't start it. Like explaining why trayvon walking AWAY from zimmerman warranted a call to police but, zimmerman walking BEHIND trayvon didn't warrant self defense. What makes zimmerman able to defend himself but not trayvon.
