Whoa, you talking about Joe Oliver?? I knew there was a reason he didn't sound convincing on TV...

Who is Zimmerman Defender Joe Oliver?

In the past few weeks, the shooting death of Trayvon Martin exploded on the national stage. George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch captain who shot and killed Martin, kept his head down and did not do any interviews. Few spoke on his behalf, until Joe Oliver, a calm, compelling public speaker took to the national airwaves, prompting the question who is Joe Oliver?

Anchor, Reporter and Mortgage Underwriter

As MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell and others have pointed out, Oliver's most recent connection to Zimmerman was as a coworker at mortgage underwriting firm Digital Risk. Oliver says he met Zimmerman through his wife, who is a "close friend" of Zimmerman's mother-in-law, and has known him for six years.

The Orlando Sentinel confirmed that Zimmerman worked at Digital Risk before the shooting. Oliver confirmed that "we're co-workers." Oliver's LinkedIn profile calls him a "Forensic Chart Review Specialist" -- he processes loans in default for forensic underwriting, a job related to Florida's continuing housing meltdown.

Previously, Oliver has been an anchor/reporter at WESH-TV in Orlando, at KRON-TV in San Francisco, and at CNN in Atlanta. His WESH profile lists his honors: "Joe recieved [sic] an Emmy nomination and worked on the Emmy award-winning newsmagazine 'The West/In American' while working at KCRA-TV, Sacramento, Calif. He also recieved [sic] an Environmental Media Award for his story about the effects that the politics of Haiti have had on the island for CNN's 'Earth Matters' newsmagazine show."

Zimmerman's Media Assistant?

These credentials may be why he came forward to defend a friend he claims is not a racist. But the "help" he offers has been characterized as "odd" or even "bizarre," "misleading." Out of the box Oliver raised hackles by asserting: "If we weren't sitting here talking about George shooting Trayvon, we'd be talking about Trayvon shooting George." All currently available information has Martin being completely unarmed -- famously carrying only Skittles, an iced tea, and the cell phone on which he was talking to his girlfriend.

In an interview with Chris Matthews on MSNBC's "Hardball," he was asked to explain the racial slur that listeners claim can be heard on Zimmerman's 911 call: "Were you surprised when you heard he used the racial slur?" Matthews asked. "The f'ing c-word. Were you surprised he used a term like that?" Oliver said that, in his interpretation of the recording, Zimmerman could have said either "coon" or "goon," and tried to justify each: "There are a lot of parts of this country where people proudly call themselves coon-asses, Louisiana, in particular." He added that he didn't know "too many people under 40 that use that term as a racial slur." These assertions immediately brought howls of derision from multiple quarters.

Oliver says he had taken a leave of absence from his paper pushing job and is not being paid for this work. Yet, many suspect that the search for a new job is what motivates Oliver.

LOL this guy Oliver is a clown. He defended Zimmerman saying the word coon??!! HAHA omg this nigga is a clown beyond words. Get off the stage you big dummy

Allah U. Akbar claims/said

Trayvon was asked if the jewelry, which was mostly women’s rings and earrings, belonged to his family or a girlfriend.

“Martin replied it’s not mine. A friend gave it to me,” according to the report. Trayvon declined to name the friend.

Here's the hypocrisy so many black people refuse to understand. Given these facts above I'll hypothesize for the moment and see how some of you folks respond. If this young man were white - & was caught with these items would black people/ et al not draw some serious conclusions about what this young white boy/ man was potentially up to. The outrage is understandable (Trayvon Martine case), but why is it always directed toward others who had absolutely nothing to do with this case? I swear the double standard has become so acceptable today, the truth doesn't really matter anymore.

theres no hypocrisy...

1. he was"suspected" not proven to be the 'burglar'.

2. even if he did, does that mean h deserved to die?

crawl back in your hole, scum.

Thanks for proving my point. NO!! young people don't deserve to die - how come you can't think outside of that boxed in opinion of yours...I said hypnotize for the moment....had this been reversed and some white dude was doing the same thing as trayvon...most of you would claim this white dude was casing the place & more than likely the media would just ignore the whole story....no biggie, white people die everyday. Try looking at REAL crime statistics on a per capita basis.

this doesn't change the fact that he said he had a broken nose but showed no signs of injury when in police custody

or how trayvon was screaming help in the 911 call

or the fact he had been charged with assault before

or how he called the police something like 11 times since august of '11

or why he followed him when the dispatcher told him not to

or why he felt his life was in danger from a 17 year old "armed" with skittles and an ice tea

I'll admit it looks like this might have not be racially motivated, but I still don't think Zimmerman is still innocent

I don't disagree with a word you said but I do have some questions.

1. Come on! Without the racial tagline of a "fat bald white hispanic preying on young black males" this case is a yawn fest. After all the racial flexing, Trayvon T-shirts, Soledad O'Brien specials and Obama shoutouts, the lack of a racial motivation is a huge blow. That was the entire case!

2. Don't you think bringing up Zimmerman's past makes it fair game to bring up Trayvon's past. Of course I disagree but I expect it.

It doesn't matter if zimmerman killed trayvon because he was black. It matters that he wasn't arrested because he killed someone who was black. If he killed a white kid then the police department would have arrested him no questions asked. However the fact that a life was lost without an arrest is proof that we are being systematically set up for cases like this to occur again and unfortunately it will, unless we do something!

2. No... Because it's pretty much a fact Trayvon wasn't doing anything wrong... Unless you can prove that he was committing a crime there's no real reason to bring up trayvon's past, outside of just making him look bad..

Zimmerman's past paints him as violent and paranoid wana be cop. So In a case where he shoots someone are we just supposed to take his word that it was self defense (which is an affirmative defense) or should we take a look at his past? ..

BS! the media would just ignore the story - white people being killed isn't really gonna generate any outrage or be one of those 'breaking news story' type situations. FYI whenever its blacks killing whites...unless its so horrific/heinous they can't avoid said story...the media is usually to petrified of black people to report such events. IMO the media protects black people.

Hoping some infant crackas will get slaughtered 2morrow but I doubt it because they are talking too loud. You have to just kill some when you can and keep it moving.

Some black people love to talk about killing innocent babies....& then they wonder y some folks are leary of them. Actually you're probably white? which really makes these kind of remarks so disturbing. I guess playing both sides against the middle is the American way.
