Waste of time reading about lyrics that aren't that hard to decipher in the first place. I swear people put way too much emphasis on average works of art.

I gotta be honest, the bits where he breaks down the lyrics are kind of disrespectful to the reader who has the hip hop ear for lyrics. The rest of the book is great, although I've not read through it all yet.

the lyric breakdowns aren't for the hip-hop heads.

I will say that there were a couple lines here or there that I didn't catch prior to reading the book, but this book was made because of his now international success. There are so many people just dancing to the beat and/or singing along to the hook that don't realize the depth of the lyrics. The lyric breakdowns are for the Oprah & Howard Stern fans to go, "Oh my God. Did you know there's an actual purpose to the words he's putting together?"

the rest of the stories in the book are for his fans, imo

Didnt read the book posts right here...

But its a pretty good read, and he does have some interesting perspectives on life. For those that havent read it don't expect a bar for break down so much as a description of his real life experiences and how they relate to his lyrics

Judgin the book on excerpts is like reviewin a movie based on the previews....

In the book he never gave the impression he was some drug kingpin, just an ordinary hustler "livin like a vampire" doin work in hotel rooms and constantly on the road...maybe you should read it before talkin shit about it that aint even tru

I don't believe dude wrote the book for you hiphop nerds, i believe the book was written more for the casual hiphop listener or non believer. Why would the market the book for purist only, you would only alienate the majority.

If it had stories about the process behind those songs i'd get it but i don't need the lyrical breakdown.

Same as what I did. The first chapter that I read provided really good insight into the projects and his life as a shorty.

Oh shit, word son? He provided insight into the projects? Only a true scholar can do that.

shits dope. Hov's views on music and the dynamics of it are remarkable. That part about the Run DMC lyrics being percussion instruments has me looking at music in a new light. I like the narrative more than the decodings.
