One thing that most definitely keeps Biggie from being the best is his lack of diversity in subject matter. He's got about 5 good stories. 1 of them is about getting caught fucking someone else's bitch. The other 4 are about hits/heists.

Yeah but that's what makes him a great storyteller because he didn't really live that life, he just rapped about it.

You should also listen to the "One More Chance(Remix)" Its not really a story but he's rapping about living a certain lifestyle and he does it effortlessly.

Yeah, but a quality that a candidate for GOAT storyteller has to have is the ability tell a variety of different stories with the same quality.

Ghost can tell a story about going to the barbershop and getting a bad cut just as well as he can tell a story about committing a home invasion.

Nas can tell a story about catching his girl cheating just as well as he can a story about a woman's dying words.

Biggie probably could tell more versatile stories, but he never did.

Juicy was Big's rags to riches story.

That wasn't a story. There was no narrative. It was just him contrasting his life at the time to where he had come from.

No it started with him talking his early struggles then selling drugs to eventually getting rich. Juicy was a storytelling song. Everyday a Struggle was based on a close friend of Big btw.

We can agree to disagree. I don't believe it's a story.

Verse One:

It was all a dream

I used to read Word Up magazine

Salt'n'Pepa and Heavy D up in the limousine

Hangin' pictures on my wall

Every Saturday Rap Attack, Mr. Magic, Marley Marl

I let my tape rock 'til my tape popped

Smokin' weed and bamboo, sippin' on private stock

Way back, when I had the red and black lumberjack

With the hat to match

Remember Rappin' Duke, duh-ha, duh-ha

You never thought that hip hop would take it this far

Now I'm in the limelight 'cause I rhyme tight

Time to get paid, blow up like the World Trade

Born sinner, the opposite of a winner

Remember when I used to eat sardines for dinner

Peace to Ron G, Brucey B, Kid Capri

Funkmaster Flex, Lovebug Starsky

I'm blowin' up like you thought I would

Call the crib, same number same hood

It's all good

Uh, and if you don't know, now you know, nigga, uh

Chorus:

You know very well who you are

Don't let em hold you down, reach for the stars

You had a go, but not that many

'cause you're the only one I'll give you good and plenty

Verse Two:

I made the change from a common thief

To up close and personal with Robin Leach

And I'm far from cheap, I smoke skunk with my peeps all day

Spread love, it's the Brooklyn way

The Moet and Alize keep me pissy

Girls used to diss me

Now they write letters 'cause they miss me

I never thought it could happen, this rappin' stuff

I was too used to packin' gats and stuff

Now honies play me close like butter played toast

From the Mississippi down to the east coast

Condos in Queens, indo for weeks

Sold out seats to hear Biggie Smalls speak

Livin' life without fear

Puttin' 5 karats in my baby girl's ears

Lunches, brunches, interviews by the pool

Considered a fool 'cause I dropped out of high school

Stereotypes of a black male misunderstood

And it's still all good

Uh...and if you don't know, now you know, nigga

Verse Three:

Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis

When I was dead broke, man I couldn't picture this

50 inch screen, money green leather sofa

Got two rides, a limousine with a chauffeur

Phone bill about two G's flat

No need to worry, my accountant handles that

And my whole crew is loungin'

Celebratin' every day, no more public housin'

Thinkin' back on my one-room shack

Now my mom pimps a Ac' with minks on her back

And she loves to show me off, of course

Smiles every time my face is up in The Source

We used to fuss when the landlord dissed us

No heat, wonder why Christmas missed us

Birthdays was the worst days

Now we sip champagne when we thirst-ay

Uh, damn right I like the life I live

'Cause I went from negative to positive

And it's all...

(It's all good)

...and if you don't know, now you know, nigga, uh

Uh, uh...and if you don't know, now you know, nigga

Uh...and if you don't know, now you know, nigga, uh

Representin' B-Town in the house, Junior Mafia, mad flavor, uh

Uh, yeah, a-ight

There are story telling elements there. But he's really just reminiscing. It's not really a strong narrative. It's a good song but if you consider it a story, it's not a very impressive one. Songs like that are a dime a dozen in the rap game.

I Think 2Pac Was By Far The Best Story Teller. JAY Z Kanye West Nas And 50 Cent Ain't that far behind him. But With The Notorious B.I.G. was Like The East Coast Ice Cube With His Storytelling. you could see every Picture He Painted with His Lyrics!

Yeah but he only made two albums and he still gets brought up in the discussion of great storytellers. No disrespect to Ghostface, but how many albums does he have?

Ok, but you could pick any two albums from Ghostface and still get more varied storytelling. Hell you don't have to even pick whole albums. You could just look at his featurings on other people's shit. It's possible that Biggie's storytelling could have diversified in the future, but he really showed no signs of doing that and we'll never know what would have happened. All we can do is go by what is fact. And Biggie's storytelling was very captivated, but also very limited.

Definitely Ricky D.

I like scarface when it comes to storytelling check out the "Suicide Note" among others, biggie was cool but for a guy with 1 and a half good albums I never saw the hype, 2pac wanted to destroy him but in turn made him even bigger.

Yeah when i thought of best storyteller, Ghostface and Raekwon immediately came to mind. Also Busta Rhymes had some good story's

The reason Biggie is considered one of the GOAT Storyteller's is cause well, He's one of the GOAT storytellers. One of the biggest praises Biggie's gets aside from his amazing flow, lyrical skills and smooth voice is the fact his was very visual with his wordplay and descriptions. This is what separated him from other storytellers. The way Big narrated and sometimes played the main character himself brought you into the story a lot more and made it more believable.

Biggie called himself "The Hitchcock of Hip Hop" which "Notorious" is a famous film by Hitchcock, his name Frank White was taken from "The King of New York" film. His main name, Biggie was taken from a Bill Cosby and Poitier film "Let's Do It Again". The point? Biggie was a huge movie buff and you can tell by his storytelling. Someone stated "Biggie didn't have a variety of Stories"? Are you kidding? Biggie gave you a wide spectrum:

Somebody's Got To Die - This is a revenge hit gone wrong. Biggie sets the scene, the story is told in 3 acts. The shock ending as Jason holds his daughter and Biggie and his goons run away wondering if they hit the baby. This would be Suspense Thriller.

Me and My Bitch - This is a tragic Love Story where Biggie's main chick gets caught up in some street justice. Biggie explains in detail why she was a ride or die chick. Method Man stated after hearing this song for the 1st time when it was over it felt like the credits started rolling. This would be a Drama

I Got a Story To Tell - This funny story find Biggie creeping on the wife of a famous Bball player. Doing the one thing he knew he should he actually goes to have sex with her in his house. Not knowing the player's schedule, he pops up out of no where. The story then takes a dark turn as Big turns into a thief to get out. This would be a Romatic comedy

Gimmie the Loot - Biggie plays multiple Characters as he sets the stage for this crime tale of two petty criminals on an average day robbing and stealing. The story goes into detail of the mind state of both criminals and why they are doing what they are doing. The story ends in a shootout with the cops. This would be an Action/crime story.

Respect - Biggie tells his life story in 3 parts, the 1st part is from the womb of his mother, the 2nd part is him as a teenager and the last part is him in his current state. Ironically NaS's "Fetus" came out years later but Big used the speaking from the womb concept here. This song as well as "Juicy" and "Sky's The Limit" were reflecting storytelling of Big's life, he was narrating his life story.

Niggas Bleed - This is a Mobb story about a crime boss and his top henchmen. When the Boss tell him to go and take care of a job, Biggie goes and recruits a ruthless criminal called Arizona Ron. Biggie goes into detail in the 1st act as he has a conversation with the Boss. The 2nd Act gives us the back story on his partner Ron. The last act finds Biggie and Ron in a shootout in the hotel. Unlike "Gimme the Loot", "Niggas Bleed" criminals are way more skilled. For a serious story it ends on a funny note with Big once again reminding you of his humor.

Warning - This concept was amazing cause it was basically a story told over a phone call. Big gets the page and returns the call only to find out his enemies are coming to get him. During the call Big gets the who, what, where and why. He ends the call explaining what he will do to his enemies.

Everyday Struggle - This is another reflective Storytelling on Big talking about why he's in the drug game and ups and downs of living in that lifestyle. The 1st act talks about his mental state, the 2nd act deals with his drug dealings and the last act talks about how he wants to get out the game but can't.

Things Dun Changed - This is a narration but still a storytelling song as Big reflects on how things around him have changed from his youth till now. The pictures he paints really brings to his surrounding in Brooklyn.

Mind you "Ready To Die" is a storytelling album as a whole as it begins with his birth and ends with his death on "Suicidal Thoughts" which is also a storytelling song. "Life After Death" picks up like a Blockbuster movie sequel to "Ready to Die". Big would also throw a story in verses, like on "Get Money", that whole verse is storytelling about Biggie issues with his wife. Or "Miss U" where he talks about what happen to people he knew in the streets. So you throw in that amazing flow, voice, lyrics, wordplay and this is why til this day Big is considered one of the GOAT Storytellers. NaS, Ghost, Slick Rick and plenty others are skillful in the art of storytelling. But Big's storytelling skills can't be questioned. So I leave you with "Gimmie the Loot" cause to me this song shows you the skill level of Biggie's storytelling:
