Things were worse in the 60s and 70s, true, but America can slide down a long, bad road as long as people don't feel served by justice. There are plenty of people out there frustrated at the system and more then willing to take things an extra step.

less about the issues of the times and more about the decision to always declare "civil wars" and "unheard-of levels of terrorism" and so on. all political sides whipping up fear in order to pass more laws.

People have always been opportunistic, especially politicians. I already know more laws won't help, police are above the law anyway. That to me, is the biggest thing fueling the fire right now.
 
All it takes for civil war is weapons and an ideology saying it's OK to kill people who disagree with you.
