Marshall Bruce Mathers III, better known by his stage name Eminem is an American rapper, record producer, and actor. Eminem quickly gained popularity in 1999 with his major-label debut album The Slim Shady LP, which won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. The following album, The Marshall Mathers LP, became the fastest-selling solo album in history.] It brought Eminem increased popularity, including his own record label, Shady Records, and brought his group project D12 to mainstream recognition.
Hip Hop has always been a culture dominated by black people. Sure, there were white people and hispanics involved when the movement began, but for the most part hip hop was a way for blacks to release frustrations, speak their mind, and unveil their culture to the public.
Eminem was immediately embraced into the culture, the first WHITE emcee to be thought of as one of the greatest lyricists ever. He has had plenty of prominent black co-signs in the industry, including Rakim who said "if eminem was black...he'd be the muhammad ali of rap." Jay-Z, Nas, Ludacris, T.I, Outkast, The Lox, Lil Wayne, KRS-1, Russel Simmons, and of course Dr. Dre have also co-signed the WHITE emcee.
In December, 2009 Eminem was named the Artist of the Decade by Billboard Magazine. According to Billboard, Eminem has two of his albums among the top five highest selling albums of the 2000s. Eminem, a WHITE emcee in a black dominated genre, is also the highest selling rapper ever.
In 2002, hasbeen rapper Benzino (also co-owner of the Source magazine) started a feud with rapper Eminem. Benzino claimed that Eminem was a product of the machine that sought to discredit black and Latino artists' contributions to hip-hop. Benzino released a diss record called "I Don't Wanna" where he claimed that Eminem was not real and true to the rap culture. It was not until Benzino dissed Eminem again with "Pull Up Your Skirt", that Eminem responded with 2 blistering diss tracks, first "The Sauce" and then "Nail in the Coffin".
Obviously salty over getting embarassed on wax, 'zino did everything he could to try and expose the "great white hope."
It went as far to dig up an old tape in which a young Eminem was rapping racial slurs against Blacks and women.
"I don't like that n*gger shit," said eminem on a freestyle. He also said all black women were bitches and no-good.
"All the girls I like to bone have big butts/ No they don't, 'cause I don't like that n----- sh--/ I'm just here to make a bigger hit."
"Blacks and whites, they sometimes mix/ But black girls only want your money, 'cause they're dumb chicks…Never date a black girl, because blacks only want your money/ And that sh-- ain't funny."
For a white rapper who was embraced by blacks and became the most popular rapper in the world, this was the ultimate "ethering." Forget Nas...forget Jay. What eminem did to black people will go down as the biggest sonning in the history of rap.
"I am the worst thing since Elvis PResely, to do black music so selfishly, and use it to get myself wealthy!"
