Execs are to blame and this is why. Execs care about profit. They want Billboard charting singles, artistic integrity be damned. CEO of Cash Money records Brian "Baby" Williams says all the time, "We just about this money". I'm sure would artists would love to give the fans the music they like but there's always some label head telling them, "Oh yeah we love that song, but so and so made this song and sold x amount of copies, so let's make one similar, but we still love this other song". I know most hip hop fans would rather hear the best songs, not the most popular ones. It's a business and that's all about profit. So that single has to chart. Take Lupe Fiasco and his album "Lasers", If he is to be believed.

Quoted from his wiki page:

At a performance in New Zealand in February 2010, Fiasco performed new material from the then-titled We Are Lasers for the first time. He claimed that the album was complete and waiting for a release date from his label, Atlantic Records. However, Atlantic feared that the record lacked commercial singles, and presented Fiasco with songs the label wanted him to record. Fiasco declined, as he was told he would not have ownership of the songs.

So what happens, the artist feels he doesn't need "singles" because it's good music regardless so I shouldn't have to record new songs to fit in with a radio format. He feels his music can stand against anyones. but the exec won't take a chance and says make a more formulaic song, something they can dance to, with a catchy hook.

As we have seen, the artist wasn't happy with Lasers, the fans were not happy with Lasers, but it had catchy singles and they label moved units and that's all the exec cares about, because guess what, he's getting a bonus now. The fans wanted The Cool, Food and Liquor, Lupe. A label exec made the decision to give them something else.

Industry Rule #4080

"Record company people are shady", in the immortal words of A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip.

1st point: I bring up Lupe only to say that his album was supposedly delayed because he had no "singles". Lupe said it was ready he handed it in. Well, if Lupe didn't delay it, then a higher-up did.

2nd: Most of the fans are sheep who are easily duped into buying whatever is deemed hot at the moment, due to the fact they were probably on some type of drug when they heard it. The execs have a whole team of mufuckas waiting to exploit the next sensation. Chief Keef has no rap talent whatsoever. He's hot at the moment and for some reason, some label exec gave this talentless black kid a deal so hopefully white teens will buy it up. Because that's what it's all about, white dollars, especially if your on a major label. you better believe than executive is pimping that hoe.

Moedays is probally the best debater I have seen on AHH and I always thought I held the crown but I wouldn't last a round with this guy....he's intelligent, informed, and invincible based on this battle.

I got this guy going to the finals.

Best one I've read so far. Sion came on pretty damn strong that second go around. Lookin forward to the 3rd round fellas, ima vote as fair as I can

My reasoning for voting for Sion:

He better explained his argument although I didn't agree with his topic. My job as a voter is to vote on who made the better argument and not which topic I agree with.

wow,.... he hit him with a punch to the throat with that 3rd argument. Come wit it Moe or this thing is done here.

I'll leave you with this:

Payola, in the American music industry, is the illegal practice of payment or other inducement by record companies for the broadcast of recordings on music radio in which the song is presented as being part of the normal day's broadcast.

KRS-1, an icon in hip hop, told of having to pay a certain NY radio DJ to get a song played.

I think the fans would rather hear the dope shit, but they don't get to make that choice. The fans aren't choosing the songs. The songs have been chosen for them. Your not getting a battle of the beats.

The fans can hoop and holler and sign petitions and it might work, for a little while, but fans don't own any radio stations, tv stations. With the Telecommunications act of 1996 signed by everybody's favorite "black" president, there are now only 5 major media companies and if I'm not mistaken, music, videos, movies is all media or is at least used via media.

According to the 2011 Fortune 500 list, The Walt Disney Company is America's largest media conglomerate in terms of revenue, with News Corporation, Time Warner, CBS Corporation and Viacom completing the top 5.[2] Other major players are NBCUniversal, and Sony Corporation of America.

You not talking slick about none of these corporations or their subsidiaries especially if they own the radio station, and they do.

Your song could unite the world and cure all disease. They can't have millions of people liking that song either because then what. It won't see the light of day on their airwaves.

I'm not saying the fans don't have some fault, but which fans are we talking about. White fans, Black fans. Black fans have the LEAST amount of power in any way you look at it. So what the hell is a petition really gonna if there are only black names on it. They're gonna tell your black ass to gtfo of their office. Oh you don't like that video of Nelly sliding the credit card in the girls ass, tough shit viewership is up 70% when that videos on.

My final point is that the artist can create the media, but at some point it's out of his hands. He tries to give you what you want via mix tapes or what have you, but he nor the fans have no control over whats played over their airwaves. The fans don't own shit, especially the black ones. They might only have a radio.
