No Scarface T/S?

He's not automatically a name that slips out when discussing top 5's. I think he's top 15 tho

Is you high man? He's the master story teller. No wack albums, universal respect and acclaim from EVERYONE, how can he not be top 5.

The lack of respect I've seen for Face and Cube is disgusting.

Scarface

Lupe

Jay-Z

UGK

Nas

Honorable Mention: Jeezy

There's no such thing as "should be in everybody's top 5". Can we make this thread the thread where we recognize the subjectivity of hip hop. Your top 5 is never going to match mine because we live different lives, and what I listen for in hip hop might not be the same as you. You can't tell too many white boys that eminem ain't the greatest of all time just like niggas can't tell me Scarface ain't the GOAT. Lupe is the most lyrical rapper i've ever heard, but a lot of niggas won't believe that, and it's cool. It's all subjective, niggas been beatin dead horses due to boredom for years startin these corny ass threads. Ya'll wanna start a thread, do a series for niggas to make a case for these "obvious" choices. Start with Big, Pac, Nas, Hov, and Rakim, or whoever you feel like is obvious. As long as people like Flo-Rida don't appear in the series, it should be dope. Maybe you might sway some people, incite good, evolved convo, not this rap city the basement shit, that ship has sailed, somebody might give a history lesson that make you look at an artist different, who knows, but I do know, ya'll can't keep hittin niggas wit this.

Aint shit going to change. And anyone that doesn't reserve the top spots for the fathers\creators\pioneers of this Hip Hop MCing shit are all frauds in my opinion and are only interested in repping their city, era and personal opinions..

Hip hop is art. Art is subjective. Bob Ross might be better than picasso to a lot of niggas. Some people like pepsi, some people like Coke. At this point, we've done the top 5 spinoff thread so many times, might as well take it to another level. Without turning them into appreciation threads, make a case for why these common names should be in the top 5. You have the surface discussion mastered, now mine deeper. You don't just keep diggin at the same level. If pac keep showin up for ya'll, and he's not in mine, why is he in ya'lls. Makes for better discussion I think.

While Art is subjective. There are indisputable facts and evidence as to who the creator\pioneers are. I am not going to go around and around with people that want to dispute facts while, not giving the creators their deserved spots because, of someone circle jerk of an argument (subjectivity).

When it's obvious that's one thing, but there's artists, many more than 5 that have an argument for that designation. That's where the discussion really begins. You can give credence to the pioneers, that doesn't mean they are the most skilled. A top 5 spot is for one who is the most skilled, but like I said, see where we butt heads? I think it's for the most skilled, but my personal top 5 is who I like the most regardless of skill because jeezy's not more skilled than anybody lol, but yours reserves spaces for pioneers out of respect, neither one of us is wrong. So many people have a case for a spot.

And that's the rub. My top 5 isn't based on who I like. It's base of this fact and this fact alone the Top 5 MC's that should occupy those spots would do so because, without them there is nothing after them. Without their blueprints, skills, creativity, and heart their is no Hip Hop MCing in it current incarnations.

Interesting. I'd say you're definitely in the minority with this thought process.

I have no doubts about this. I choose to actually respect the culture and it's architects and not let my personal bias, get in the way.

That statement itself is in fact, personal bias because you choose the criteria. First doesn't make you best. Put a caveman ass wheel on a Ferrari and try to drive to the gas station, let me know how that work for you. And there's nothing iron clad that says one MC is better than the next. To me, there's nothing like listening to lupe black out, but I got lil homies that swear by tupac because of what his music helped em get through in life. I got an OG who tell you Rakim the best of all time because he basically invented the flow that you hear so much today. There's so much you can draw from. Just because you believe something don't mean it's absolute, that's all i'm saying. I respect the fuck out of your opinion on this, and many other things i've read from you. You not wrong, you just not right either, if that make sense.

My statement is fact. Without the caveman's wheel there is no Ferrari. I am not arguing about who is better. I can assure you this any MC you choose to tell me is, that or that I can point directly too his father and who that MC has either out right BITTEN or at the very least modeled themselves after.

The issue with people like you is, you try to hard for no reason at all to place your generation of artists above their predecessors and creators. Instead of these little corny ass top 5 lists what we should be looking at is a family tree or a genealogy chart. But this fucks with fragile psyche of many because, artists like lupe would have to be listed below their Hip Hop ancestor\creator. So, in your generations zeal to be different you keep missing the FACT that what the artists you place in spots they don't deserve has already been done.

Keep enjoying Lupe Black out. To me there is nothing like hearing ANY dope MC Black out. I watched Lupe Black out on Sway. But I also watched Mr. Fab (who I couldn't name one song from) black out as well. One of the dopest freestyles I have ever witnessed. So, you can continue with your slanted approach mine isn't and when it is such as my saying NAS is by far the dopest MC ever is my opinion. However, Nas isn't in my top 10 maybe not even 15 if I put more thought into it.

While I am not attempting to be right. I just am.

While I am not attempting to be right. I just am.

You're taking it personal my G, you're attacking me while i'm just explaining my perspective, I never made it generational so that trying too hard to place one generation above the other point you made is invalid. That's a fact. You want another fact? I have my own set of parameters. You have yours. There's nothing definitively making someone better than the next. If I don't put 80s rappers in my whole top 5, move on homie. How the fuck can you tell me how to interpret art? Nigga it's art. Now for an opinion, Lupe and/or Nas would absolutely obliterate anybody that dropped an album in the 80s on a lyrical scale, but that's my opinion, that's why they're in my top 5, based on skill, and that skill is subject to my own interpretation which in fact makes it my opinion. Want more subjectivity, Scarface was what I listened to my whole hip hop life from free lunch to paid vacation, and he's the greatest of all time FOR ME because of how much his albums have been apart of defining moments in my life. See how that work?

Do I recognize the forefathers, hell yea, if my top 5 was based off who took the culture furthest, and did so skillfully Jay-Z would be the only post 80s artist on the list. Again, opinion, but easier to measure. But when it comes to top 5s top 10s or any number, it's based on criteria defined by the list creator. So it's subjective. Has nothing to do with young and old so miss me wit that shit. I grew up on Face, and he was rockin in 87. So there's that. If you want to do a family tree, i'd love it. I think it should be done because that would be dope as fuck, and I don't think it's ever been done, you have the knowledge, so bless the IC wit it, i'll bump that thread every day.
