Marvel's Black Panther Casts Angela Bassett

Marvel's Black Panther continues to stack an impresive cast of black actors, as Marvel has announced that Angela Bassett has joined the cast. She will play Ramonda, mother of T'Challa.

In the comics, Ramonda is actually the surrogate mother of T'Challa, after T'Challa's mother died giving birth to him. She became the new wife of T'Chaka. She was abducted and abused for many years by a white supremacist, before being rescused by Black Panther and welcomed back into Wakanda.

Clearly things will be different in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; hearing that Bassett will play "mother of T'Challa" suggests that Ramonda's storyline wil be streamlined for the film.

Kevin Feige Comments On X-Men Joining The Marvel Cinematic Universe

avengers_vs_xmen.jpg

It's a sad day for X-Men fans, at least if you're a big proponent of Marvel Studios.

For years there have been rumors circulating that FOX, who owns both the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchise movie rights, would at some point either sell the franchises back to Marvel or land on some kind of deal that would allow the fan favorite mutants to join with Marvel's other cinematic properties.

Unfortunately some recent comments from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige pretty much hammered the final nail in that coffin.

Feige spoke to Variety about a myriad of topics, and at one point was asked since if they could partner with FOX as they did with Sony for Spider-Man. Feige said "It’s an impossibility at this juncture. We certainly have enough films to keep us busy for a number of lifetimes."

"crickets"

Yeah, that's a pretty solid no, and unfortunately, it doesn't look to change anytime soon. Recent reports out of FOX indicate that they are interested in rebooting their X-Men universe, as well as building upon the successful foundation of Deadpool. They've also got a New Mutants project in the works alongside the ever delayed Gambit project and the rumored X-Force project.

Still, it's a bit disappointing that both sides couldn't come to an agreement like Marvel did with Sony, though it bears mentioning that those franchises are in two different places. Sony had the rights to one character and anything affiliated with him, whereas FOX has the rights to two premiere Marvel groups and their huge worlds. Sony had also previously rebooted the character twice already and wasn't interested in doing it for a third time unless it was sure it had something, thus the Marvel deal. Sony can rely on Marvel Studio's expertise in regards to their premiere character, and Sony reaps the benefits with spinoff's and additional advertising and goodwill.

While they aren't pursuing a full-on merging of their properties, the two studios can at least work together in some capacity. The two companies previously made a deal that let Marvel Studios have EGO the living planet for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. FOX was then allowed to make significant changes to Negasonic Teenage Warhead for Deadpool.

Feige isn't wrong about a full schedule either, as Marvel Studios has plans for years to come, and has plenty of other characters to implement into their film universe.

Its too bad they cant make the deal happen, but understandable. The X Men universe can stand on its own just fine they just need better quality films. I think it would be awesome if they rebooted the franchise if they put it in the right hands. FOX is the only studio that is making R Rated comicbook films too (big company comicbook films). Inhumans will fill up the void of mutants in the MCU and it will be a batch of characters the world isnt too familiar with so that will be cool to see.

Does suck not seeing Wolverine with the Avengers or Spidey with the Xmen, but we'll live.

Finding A Female Director For Captain Marvel Is A Priority

In 2018, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be making way for Captain Marvel. The female hero will be introduced to fans by Brie Larson, and fans are eager to see the acclaimed actress take on the role. In recent years, the comic book iteration of Captain Marvel has become increasingly connected with female empowerment, and Marvel Studios wants to honor that reputation with the film. Now, Kevin Feige is commenting on how the project plans to do so, and one way will be with a female director.

In a recent interview with Variety, the president of Marvel Studios confirmed finding a female director for Captain Marvel was an upmost priority.

“It is,” he told the site. “Having a female director at the helm to tell the story of a woman who is also our most powerful hero by far is very important to us.”

So far, there is no director officially attached to the project, but the Internet has been buzzing over shortlisted filmmakers. Earlier this year, reports surfaced that Marvel Studios had narrowed down their possible hires to a select few candidates. Niki Caro, Lorene Scafaria, Rebecca Thomas, and Leslie Linka Glatter were all included on the list.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting confirmation about the studio’s hire, but no news has been released. Feige has talked about the delay, and he told Vulture the studio wanted to make sure it chose a director wisely. He said his team has “been meeting [with] amazing filmmakers” and “expect to have a director by the end of the year.”

"With Captain Marvel, there's so much potential in the comics and there have been so many incarnations of her powers and the characters who've had that mantle that we've been focusing in on exactly how do we tell her origin,” Feige said. “How does it fit into the cosmic side of our universe? How does it fit into what we're doing with the next Avengers movies? So really, that's what's been delaying that particular announcement."

Whoever does tackle Captain Marvel, they will be dealing with the hero’s origin story. Feige said the movie was certainly a telling of her superhero start, and screenwriters Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve echoed those words. However, the duo did say they would have to alter some parts of Carol Danver’s story because of the Green Lantern of all things.

“Here’s the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do," Perlman said, nodding to Carol's canonical origin. "There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And also, she’s her own person and she’s a great character. We have to be aware of what’s happened in other Marvel film and makes sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that’s going on at the same time. It’s a little bit of an interesting story gauntlet.”

Captain Marvel will hit theaters on March 8, 2019.

Black Panther going to have a Roots type of all-star cast. All they need now is Denzel Washington playing the first Black Panther in a dream sequence

Nah bruh ...all they need is James Earl Jones playing the first Black Panther in his Mufasa voice....

I like the lane she's in right now, don't think taking on the mainstream suits someone with her sensibilities.

Ayo, comic heads, was the black dude Daniel that was killed protecting the facility in Dr. Strange the brother of Brother Voodoo?

The one that he carried with him, at all times.

Also Dormammu grabbed some of Galactus storyline, is Galactus still Fox?

He has the same name, but we'll have to see if they actually do something with it or leave it as an Easter egg.

As for Dormammu, he was pretty consistent with his comic counterpart.

Definitely wasnt feeling Dr. Strange. Too many scenes dragged on forever and overall the film always felt like something was missing. Def not one of Marvel's best efforts.
