Ryan Coogler Says Black Panther Will Be His Most Personal Movie To Date

blackpantherryancoogler-165510.png

When making his independent film Fruitvale Station, Ryan Coogler had to worry about having enough money to finish, getting into a film festival, having it liked, being bought, and being distributed. After going through all of that and having his first studio film, Creed, become a big hit with the box office, critics and fans of the Rocky series, he looks at Marvel's Black Panther as a blessing.

Coogler's biggest challenge will be making a Black Panther film that incorporates his style and also fits seamlessly into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"It’s a specific challenge," Coogler told Fast Company. "What Marvel’s doing, and what you see a lot of studios doing now that Marvel has done it so successfully, is making content that exists in a particular universe, where the characters tie in and crossover, and I think that’s a great creative challenge to me—to make this movie as personal as possible. It’s going to be my most personal movie to date, which is crazy to say, but it’s completely the case. I’m obsessed with this character and this story right now, and I think it’s going to be very unique and still fit into the overall narrative that they’re establishing. I grew up as a comic book fan, and the same things used to happen in the comic books. You’d have Wolverine’s books, and they’d be so much darker and more brutal than the X-Men books, but they’d still fit in when you open the pages of the X-Men book. It’s new to movies, but it’s not new to storytelling."

It was that same personal touch that helped make Creed so special. "With making Creed, I wasn’t thinking I was gonna make a 'black Rocky' movie," he explained, "it was more that I wanted to make a movie about what me and my dad were going through, and my dad’s favorite character was Rocky, and it was kind of an allegory for us."

Black Panther will slash into theaters on February 16, 2018, and will start shooting in early 2017. It is being directed and co-written by Creed and Fruitvale Station filmmaker, Ryan Coogler.

Iron Man 3 Director Shane Black Says 'Real' Mandarin Was Marvel's Apology to Fans

Marvel's short film "All Hail the King" was a response to Iron Man 3, according to director Shane Black.

"Marvel saw so many negative things they made a whole other movie just to apologize called [sic] Hail to the King," Black told Uproxx's Mike Ryan when the topic of negative online comments regarding Iron Man 3 came up. "In which they said, 'No, no, the Mandarin is still alive. That wasn't him. There's a real Mandarin." The only reason it was made, he added, was to apologize to angry fans.

Marvel didn't expect backlash to Iron Man 3's treatment of the character—in fact, the studio thought fans would "eat it up."

"It never occurred to us the Mandarin is as iconic to people as, say, the Joker in Batman," Black said. "[Fans] just wanted to see the magic rings shoot lasers."

Black also revealed there was an "early draft" of the film where the villain was a woman. The director was explicitly told by Marvel executives the villain could not be a woman "because, after consulting, [they] decided that toy won't sell as well it it's a female."

The director said that both Iron Man 3's Stéphanie Szostak and Rebecca Hall had their roles reduced from an early draft of the script. Because of "Marvel corporate"—and not Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, Black stressed—the writers had to change the entire script. In the draft, the female character was essentially Guy Pearce's Killian character, and the major difference was the gender.

somebody need to up that "you know you done fucked up right" gif lol

Smh.

I kno' I'm late just seen Civil War. Won't write anything long since someone has probably said it, I'll just say that I didn't like Zemo's role in the movie. They might as well have fought over the last slice of pizza.

Black Panther and Spidey (already the go-to Spider-Man) were amazin'

he played that scene really well. it could've come off as forced or corny

the only thing that was missing from those gifs..was what he said after...was smoothly done! I'm hyped for BP and i really didnt pay much attention to the character before CW dropped.

Blade, Ghost Rider, And Moon Knight Rumored For Netflix Series

While Marvel and Netflix are busy finishing up their new series and planning out season 2 of Jessica Jones, there's a rumor that those might be paving the way for more of Marvel's properties on the popular streaming service.

According to MovieCreedLive.com, their sources have said that those properties will, in fact, be Blade, Ghost Rider, and Moon Knight. While there isn't any other information as of yet, we can at least speculate for a bit.

Blade and Moon Knight fit in perfectly with what Marvel and Netflix have already done, that being street level characters with interesting histories and character quirks. Blade is the most successful of the group outside of comics, but there hasn't been a new entry since Blade Trinity back in 2004. The character is ripe for this type of show, and it could do really well for the network. As for Moon Knight, the character has tons of potential, and in trusted hands could be fantastic in this type of format. The split personality and Khonshu elements of the character make a transition to film quite difficult, but in a drawn out series that can really delve into what makes him tick he could flourish.

Ghost Rider is the most intriguing choice, as he also has had some film success. The 2007 Ghost Rider was quite successful, but it spawned a 2011 sequel that was far from well received. It would be the most effect-heavy Netflix show to date for Marvel, and most likely the darkest in tone. Still, I have faith they could pull it off.

All 3 of those characters could make fucking AWESOME shows.

Arent they in a little side group together as well? in the marvel universe?

So now netflix would have the defenders and their solo shows, and if they get these guys they could all group up in a team show as well. Im pretty sure they're a team in the comics. Cant remember the name though. I thought Venom teamed up with them a lot.
