Walton Goggins Joins Ant-Man And The Wasp Cast

Ant-Man and The Wasp has added a new cast member to its already impressive line-up, with The Hateful Eight and Django Unchained star Walton Goggins joining the bunch in Atlanta.

No details regarding Goggins' role in the film have surfaced just yet but Marvel Studios is slated to have a two-hour showcase of its upcoming films on Saturday at San Diego Comic Con, where it is a safe bet that Goggins' role will be announced by the studio. Most recently, Goggins played a key role in the upcoming Tomb Raider film, opposite Alicia Vikander.

Goggins tells ComicBook.com he has been a longtime fan of super heroes, making it difficult to choose a favorite. However, while speaking in an interview ahead of The Hateful Eight's release, it didn't sound like an Ant-Man role was on the actor's radar.

"I suppose Batman was high up on the list for me," Goggins said. "My mother-in-law actually sewed a homemade Batman costume for me. I still remember that as kind of being ... but I had never felt that invincible before, and second to that, I really dug Flash Gordon. Sam Jones, man. Flash Gordon, man, and I just left there wanting that f---ing thing he had. I thought he was so cool. Yeah, probably him. Sam Jones, dude, that's funny. I mean everybody can have Superman and Batman, I'll take Flash Gordon."

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Which Marvel Character Is Walton Goggins Playing?

Ask around in some circles, and they'll tell you that Ant-Man is one of the most underrated movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe lineup. That's why it's not surprising to see that there's a good amount of fan excitement for Ant-Man and the Wasp.

In addition to seeing some of the first designs for Evangeline Lily's Wasp costume recently, we just got word that fan-favorite actor Walton Goggins (Justified, The Hateful Eight) is joining Ant-Man and the Wasp. However, in usual MCU fashion, the details about who he is playing are being kept under wraps.

We fully expect that Goggins' character (and much more about Ant-Man and the Wasp) will be revealed during San Diego Comic-Con this week; but before that, we have a few guesses as to which iconic Marvel Comics characters Goggins could portray onscreen.

Here's Who Walton Goggins Might Be Playing In Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Eric O'Grady / Black Ant

black-ant-eric-ogrady-1010756.jpg

Eric O'Grady was a low level man on the S.H.I.E.L.D. totem pole, who found Hank Pym's new Ant-Man suit in some S.H.I.E.L.D. equipment and took it to use in theft jobs, and to stalk a few women, for good measure.

Eventually, O'Grady stumbles into doing heroic work, helping to save the Earth from a Skrull invasion, and joining the Thunderbolts. That half-step into heroism leads to a true change of heart, and O'Grady takes up Hank Pym's original Ant-Man suit and becomes part of the secret Avengers. When Eric died in the line of service, he was resurrected as a Life Model Decoy under the guise of "Black Ant."

Goggins would be perfect as Eric O'Grady if Marvel Studios has a larger story arc planned for the character. Eric walks the line between being a total sleaze and a reluctant, cowardly, hero; that's a role that Goggins (famous for playing a lot of creepy-yet-awesome anti-hero types) can nail in his sleep.

Taskmaster

taskmaster-mcu-1010757.jpg

Taskmaster (aka Anthony "Tony" Masters) is a mysterious figure of the Marvel Universe, who has the unique ability to mimic the physical movements of anyone he observers. Taskmaster uses that ability to work as a trainer and combat instructor for the highest bidder.

Usually, Taskmaster works on the villain side of things, however he's also been known to train some on the hero side, such as Captain America's one-time replacement, U.S. Agent. He is most often seen running schools where he trains new generations of supervillains. When the Marvel Civil War kicked off, Taskmaster was hired by the government for the Thunderbolts team, and even worked with S.H.I.E.L.D. on jobs like testing their defenses. More recently he served as A.I.M.'s Minister Of Defense, as well as HYDRA's Avengers during the "Secret Empire" storyline.

Goggins would be perfect as Taskmaster, in that he's great at playing frightening heartless assassin types (see: American Ultra), and could pull off the menace needed - even from behind that iconic skull mask and hood. He's also a good option for the fact that he would be great playing both sides of the fence, in and out of the mask, as a sly, smirking, snake the heroes of the MCU are forced to work with.

Crossfire

William Cross was a CIA interrogator who took up a romance with a scientist named Rozalyn Backus, whom he stole brainwashing technology from, to use in his own illegal activities. Cross faked his own death, and replaced damaged parts of himself with cybernetic implants and became covert operative known as Crossfire.

Crossfire set up operations in the company of his cousin, Darren Cross, and was recruited to be part of a group of technology-based villains who struck at Nick Fury and a group of Marvel heroes who secretly attacked Doctor Doom's homeland of Latveria. During the course of the Marvel Universe saga, Crossfire has thrown in with various crime or covert syndicates that have made a play for power - including The Hood's union of street-level criminals, Misty Knight's "Villains for Hire" team, and a new iteration of The Masters of Evil.

The connection between Crossfire and Darren Cross makes the villain an obvious choice for Ant-Man and the Wasp - even though he's somewhat of a knock-off of DC's Deadshot. Anyone who knew and loved Walton Goggins' performance as Boyd Crowler in Justified should already see why he'd be good as a gun-toting, top-notch crook.

Honestly, it's dope that Stan can still do all of these appearances and still smile after losing his wife. Dude has lived a long life and is finally seeing everything he probably wanted to happen with marvel right at the end of his life. Not saying he will die super soon, but we know he doesn't have many years left.

Venom Will Borrow From John Carpenter, Jekyll & Hyde

With the massive success of the rebooted Spider-Man film franchise with Spider-Man: Homecoming which sits at number six on the year's top grossing films with a $220 million at the domestic box office, Sony is looking to expand it's comic book film catalogue.

Sony Entertainment and it's film studio Columbia Pictures isn't looking to build a singular interconnected universe like DC or Marvel have done. In an interview with Variety Columbia Pictures president Stanford Panitch explains that each film outside of the Spider-Man franchise will have it's own look and feel. Some will be large budget, some smaller, some will be horror spin-offs and films like Silver & Black (a Silver Sable and Black Cat film) will be "buddy films."

Venom, which has already cast The Dark Knight Rises Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock the man that bonds with the alien symbiote will be a horror film and not just any horror film - but one inspired by, according to Panitch: "the work of John Carpenter or David Cronenberg while promising “more pop and fun.” Variety didn't elaborate if the Carpenter/Cronenberg reference meant that it would be a lower budget film or if he was focusing on just the style of films like The Thing and The Fly with their more grotesque monsters.

While Tom Hardy is currently the only actor cast for Venom - the writing staff and director have been named. Ruben Fleischer is directing the expected October 2018 release and says that the film will be an origin story and keep with the Jekyll and Hyde relationship of the original Marvel comics. Saying in Variety, “They become almost a third being, which is what Venom is,” Fleischer says. “There’s a famous quote: ‘You’re Eddie Brock. I’m the symbiote. Together we are Venom.'"

Fleischer is best known for his 2009 film Zombieland, and will be directing a Lionsgate adaptation of the BBC series Jekyll, with Captain America's Chris Evans. The film will hopefully do better than Universal's borrish The Mummy, which introduced Russell Crowe as a take on the classic Dr. Jekyll and My. Hyde character.

Venom will be written The Amazing Spider-Man 2's Jeff Pinkner and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle's Scott Rosenberg.

I love the fact doctor strange has the ability to bring in new characters from Fox or Sony if deals ever get made in the future.

We need at least one MCU X Men film

They announced today that iron fist season 2 has been confirmed. Also, it will have a new showrunner. Don't know who that new showrunner is tho

They should get John Fusco who was the showrunner on Marco Polo. He's a writer/director with martial arts skills who has researched Eastern philosophy extensively. The guy spars with Jet Li for fucks sake. Seems like a perfect fit for me.

That'd be dope. PoLo wasn't a bad show either, sucked they got cancelled.
