Just landed my first help desk job

with just the N+ cert?

No, I have an A+ too. but im sure I could have gotten it with just an A+ though.

damn, everyone told me to just skip the A+ and get the CCNA but I kinda want the A+ so I can get a entry level job

Dont worry so much about the A+ if you already have one of the other certifications. I know someone else who got hired with just a N+ for a noc position. Do you have any certs currently? But most of the time from what i have seen most entry level positions will hire you if have at least an associates degree. So whatever positions you are looking at currently, just apply for them because the employer may be willing to take a chance on you.

you can probably find work currently, all i have is an A+ and N+ and my associates in technical writing. How much did you spend on your classes if you do not mind me asking.

Yall have any advice for some1 looking to learn & get a start in this line of work? Namely information security.

Do you have any certs currently? do you have a degree?

No I'm literally just now trying to get a start in this field... career change. I'm looking into programs in the area where I may get a degree while I work at my current place. @traestar gave me some great advice. I'll still take any advice or links if someone is willing. Trying to get a fresh start.

its at a community college so I only pay a few hundred per semester, I think its a lot easier and more efficient to learn the cisco stuff at school over self learning

I would look into it if I were you, most Universities dont have skill specific shit for Cisco so its a prestigious assoc degree to have

you dont need a certification to work at the help desk. especially if youre in college. i recommend getting an internship or some IT work before you graduate (for those in school) so you will have a headstart on the competition coming out of school. throw that experience on your resume and ball out

A+ and N+ are straight but they don't hold much weight these days. i got my a+ back when the shit never expired but now they want folks retaking the cert every 3 years like theyre cisco. not worth it, IMO

you get a CCNA cert and you can get a dope job at around $40-60k. N+ not gonna get you that type of money

I have my CCNA and got a job at 35k first year, its a bit less than 40 but i only live 5 mins away from my job so it evens out.

What i really advise anyone looking to get into the field is internalize this shit. There's so many paper "ccna's" who just have the cert but really have no idea what there doing, couldn't troubleshoot themselves out of a cardboard box. As a black man too, you have to make sure you're 100% better than your competition.

facts. you gotta fall in love with learning this shit and then it becomes second nature. and as a black person you gotta be way better than everybody for folks to take you seriously. make yourself indispensable. I left a job this summer for more money.. old job begged me to come back with even more $. the job that i left (was there for 4 months) also gave me an open door to return if this job ends.

oh and don't be scared to apply for jobs that seem out of your league. if you are certified and that cert is what they're asking for in the position. GO FOR IT

if you are studying for a cert and ready to take it and a job wants the cert or equivalent experience, GO FOR IT

never get complacent in this IT world. nothing wrong with working 6 months in a position and dipping out for more money.

My first gig was at hp in pontiac, The pay is from 13.50 to 15 but they hire a lot of new grads and students

It's lower level stuff just basic help desk but you will learn alot from your coworkers and experiences dealing with people.

If you got the time check for a company called BCforward they're the ones who got me in.

35k sets you right in the middle class down here too lol.

you at GM now? everyone I ask that worked at HP says they got hired by GM when they got bought out.

Isnt HP gone now?

thx I'll check the company out.

My current job works around my school schedule and allows me to take 4 classes a semester instead of part time so Im iffy about quitting but I dont want to graduate and be stuck with no experience

Can you really still pull this? because im currently making right under $40k doing help desk and hoping for at least $50k after I get my ccna this year.

anyone have a home lab? im thinking of setting one up.

i had one when i was studying for the IE, i sold it all

Did you switch to a virtual setup?

GNS3 for the most part, a little IOU. Right now i gotta start back studying for the CCIE, coming up on time to renew my certs. That's all I'm doing it for, don't really care for it too much now that SDN is about to take over
