think im officially going the database route. gettin some real good experience here at this internship, gonna be 1 year of SAP to put on my resume at least... now i'm tryna figure out what i can do to help my chances to land something like data base analyst. figure i go for a certification in Oracle 10g? will that have any value?

still wanna get into it security but imma worry bout that down the line. nigga tryna touch 50-60000/year by the end of 2013.

I'm going that route too, data analyst or database analyst is at the all time bottom of the totem pole, then database developer, Database Administrator, Database Architect, and finally Database Manager.

i feel like if i pay for an SAP course (or any course rather) then someone needs to be guaranteeing me a job upon completion. else all that knowledge will gradually go to waste which means money down the drain... lots of money. so im all about self study right now unless of course one of these training companys can give me that guarantee

To be honest, nothing is guaranteed! But one thing about acquiring certs is that it stays with you and employers know that you know your stuff (unless you cheated somehow). Now of course they will still tech interview you, but they see the cert on your resume and they know you have the skills they need.

And one thing that I strive for is EXPERIENCE! As an IT person, experience is MONEY! Thats why I look to get as much knowledge as possible. Now I'm not saying blow your money, but just know you are investing on an advantage!

I know I haven't posted in this thread in a while but I am glad to see it is still alive. Anyhow I am suspending my CCIE Voice run. I am doing this because Microsoft has a voice product called Lync. Lync is way better than the Cisco voice product. I truly think in the long run this product is going to be #1 in the market place and beat out Cisco. With that being said I am studying to get my certifications for the Lync product. I just don't want to put in all this time getting a CCIE Voice if I think in the long run way less people will have Cisco voice products installed which means less demand for CCIE Voice consultants.

whats good people? since the security track 4.0 just came out, there arent any books or training materials. I'm gonna go for the routing and switching CCIE by late summer and then jump on security. gonnd fuck around and have 2 ccie's by the middle of 2014

Whaddup peoplez! My update, still at my current job and still didn't get picked up yet. I'm getting better and better with the technical interviews, and I am getting calls back at least. And I'm really starting to press on my presence in the staffing agencies like TEksystems, RHT, AppleOne, and others.

This year I have to start getting my certs, I'm already in a class for my MCTS cert, so I'm going to start going for my A+ and Net+ cert now...I've been waiting around because of work and school but now I'm going to make it my business to start going for my certifications.

I've also been on Udemy, about to look at Treehouse, and start looking at other online classes to fresh up on knowledge.

With that said, aight - I just bought a voucher to take my A+. Now, is the 801/802 worth it or will the 701/702 hold just as much weight (albeit until I believe August 2013 when the 801/802 takes over). Little back drop on me - been the tech "guru" for my fam pretty much my whole life - tech is my passion - went to school for a year, 18 credits away from a AAS in IT: Network Design and Administration. Unfortunately, I can't attend this semester so I decided to use all the extra free time Ima have to study/take these certs and try to get a IT job in the meantime (I'm going hard for the A+/Network+ then CCNA and a Microsoft cert which leads me to next question...)

I see that there is no more MCTS cert, it is now the MCSA - now maybe I'm a little confused, but whats the best course to take with them? Which should I take first and which should I take after? Windows 7 or 8? Windows Server 2008 or 2012? Those in the field, what are potential employers looking for? What certs do ya'll have?

I have a lot more questions tbh, all advice is greatly appreciated.

welcome. save yourself some time and money and just go for the CCNA. network + is pointless in my opinion, especially if you want to go into network engineering. Comptia certs used to be good a few years ago since they didnt expire, but now they do every 3 years.

Well the reason they have that new "renewal policy" with the certs now are because those three years there are always new technology or methodology. To me, I want to get as much as possible, you don't need to get every cert, especially if you're following a career path. Like King is saying go for CCNA straight. If you are going for the DBA career track, its split into different companies, Oracle, Microsoft, Hadoop, Red Hat, many many companies have their own certifications. Keep that in mind that you can have a MCSA and even tho employers see you have certification, they may still require their certification.

For you, I'd say this and I've learned this as I started to look into my career, focus on one path. Then if you got in and its not working for you, use your experience as well as learn more about another path then start working towards that path. I'm not saying career hop but as you grow your career you will have to find your nitch.

I haven't checked in a while, but I thought that you could renew it! You just have to take a learning type course for Comptia.

Damn, I gotta upgrade my technology skills man. I'm starting to realize I'm falling behind the curve. I'm gonna spend the next couple months getting up to speed on all the new networking and security tools and hardware. I'm feeling out of the loop on some of these jobs that's coming across my inbox.
