Aight thanks fam. I'll just smash the 4PM-12 slots. I'm always up mad late anyway. GNS3 and VMWare just ain't working for me man. I can't get the virtual networks to play nice so I'm gonna have to definitely go the virtual lab route. I'll just put money aside every moth for lab time. All I know is as soon as I get that written out the way it's a wrap.

Security salaries can range widely depending on your certs, market, and where in security you want to do be in. I've come across positions as low as 60k and seen positions all the way up to 200k. CISSP is pretty much a must, every security position wants you to have it. I interviewed for 2 positions today. One paying 95k, and the other paying 150k.

The 95k one is Cisco VPN/Firewall and Checkpoint VPN/Firewall

The 150k one is LDAP, some scripting/coding, and application/server security

Security has multiple facets.

Network security - vpn's, firewalls, routers, switches, wlan, ids/ips

Information security - identity and access management, cryptography, dlp, device encryption

Penetration testing - network, web application, servers

Forensics

Risk management

If you're willing to travel, you can make mad paper. But you better bet at the top of your game. At that level you have to be the SME at whatever organization hires you. When shit goes wrong, you the nigga that gotta fix it.

Getting your first job is the hardest part. Once you get your foot in somewhere, then you just have to plan your career. Figure out which direction you want to go (programmer, database, networking, etc) then just specialize down that path. What I'd recommend is going on Dice.com, looking up what job title you ultimately want (for me it was sr. network engineer back when I started), and look at what skills, education, and certifications that job requires. Then start learning about all of that shit at home.

I don't know anyone who jumped straight into security. Usually it's start in help desk, move on to networking, finish off in security. That's the route I took anyway. Networking and security go hand in hand, so you'll get some security experience anyway.

ayo fyi for all the people working on their CCNA..the price is going up tomorrow 1/16 from $250 to $295

if you take them individually they are going up to $150. why? i have no clue. i think cause way too many people are beginning to go the cisco route. (thats what ive heard)

i think if you want to take it soon you can still get it for the lesser price if you book your exams today. good luck

depends on what your goals are. do you want to get into the business side of IT or the technical side?

it really doesnt matter tho...i know cats with english degrees and history degrees who are systems/network admins/engineers. its really how you go about getting your technical training/experience.

Which ever one you can learn the most from..... *dead serious*

I graduated from college and didn't even understand what a GUI based environment was. And the degree was in computers too. I can say the education sucked and the only thing good about the school was the friends I made. You can learn more from Books A Million or YouTube than some colleges. It was an HBCU like 95% black and most of the instructors were foreign w/ names you couldn't pronounce. Just try to get a good education mane, even if you have to go to tech school....

Cosign. Going to college was the worst decision I ever made. Was a waste of fucking time and money.

yeah i bookmarked the one i made for reference cuz it had some real info. like 20 somethin pages deep. how you delete that?

Anyway I've been on a mean hunt for a help desk position. I may hear some good news today, praying on it. If it happens boyyyyyy, im bouta be GRIMIN this year. I know ppl consider help desk a shitty job, but all I see is opportunity

i just started help desk in oct and i see it the same way you do as an opportunity. right now im getting knowledge from alot of places mainly vpn. i plan on getting some certs probably during summer cause i gotta pay for my weeding. but i plan on being here for a yr yr and a half but during that time i plan on studying for certsand making a move into the infosec sector

To be honest, it was something that I had to think about after I graduated high school. People ask for it, yet if you go the certification and experience route, you could get there too. College is a waste of money but I think the things I've learned around college helped me to understand whats out there in terms of IT careers, different programming languages, etc.

Same here, but I am trying to look for a second, part time gig, or freelance or something. I want to stack up that resume!

best decision i ever made. took advantage of the school's relationships with employers and it was a wrap after that.

i went straight into network security from quality assurance / web specialist.

looks like we're back in this bitch people...lemme know everyones progress/big moves/studies etc

been studying for this CCIE written...trying to knock it out by mid march. Been handling this racktime all while shit has been picking up at work. Put my resume out there and got all kinds of feedback, so i should have a new gig soon

Planning on finishing the last CCNP exam end of this month and going for the written mid to late March, everything is on schedule for the lab in August. I can't wait for this shit to be over.

The job I got a few weeks back fell through, niggas was talking about only 1 month contract, but I gotta new one already paying 130k. Plus I've gotten a couple e-mails for remote work at home jobs paying between 50-60/hr each. I'm gonna try to do all 3 and just cake up like crazy. Fuck around and make 500k this year lol.
