Does him being white help him in his career of selling albums? Yes. Of course it does.
I'll say sales don't mean that much, all it means is you appealed to the consumer. Vanilla Ice sold 11 million of just, "To The Extreme"? He was a fake, he wasn't the real deal. He says they built an image for him, they tried hard to promote him and push him as a white artist and it worked. He was the first very successful high selling white rapper that was solo who had no mic skills. He sold because he was white. Looking back on it Ice says he hates it.
So in other words, sales = nothing but popularity.
I can't speak for ALL fans but at least me being a fan = relation to content and love for his lyricism. I didn't like him because he was white, I liked him for his MUSIC.
I just want to clear up the "Relapse = trash". He never said it was trash from a stand point of content or lyricism. He hates it for the accents he use. He says (right after release of Relapse) that he didn't purposely spit with an accent. He said at the time it was just something that he would do without noticing. Sure, he noticed AFTERWARDS but for some reason was very happy. He got the love/hate relationship for that accent. He now hates it, probably because he felt it was too excessive and annoying. Reason why I say he doesn't think it's trash due to content/lyricism was because he said... "From Infinite down to the last Relapse album he's still shittin'" meaning still doing the same dope lyricism, that part he's happy with. That's how I take it.
As for Encore, you gotta think, when people went to buy this album they didn't know it was crap. He really just put in an all filler album with no attempt at real content. Fans bought into it thinking it's either like MMLP or TES, in all it wasn't. Every Eminem fan will tell you that it's his last album they'll categorize as good.
Should his sales be taken seriously? I say YES.
Why? Because he isn't a lame white rapper. His content does = content that people can relate to. You don't necessarily have to relate to him exactly but to the extent of what he goes through. People can relate to his "baby mama drama", people can relate to losing someone so close to you it was like your brother. People can relate to going through some type of recovery from whatever drug, alcohol or whatever. People can relate to even him speaking on race.
He's a white rapper that has very dope mic skills and that should be taken seriously, he isn't a joke.
Vanilla Ice shouldn't be taken seriously, he had a fake image built, he had no real mic skills. He sold as a joke.
