It's always an educated guess unless they're looking at obvious bone structure remains. Certain genes are more commonly found in certain geographic regions than others, and because race traditionally runs along geographical lines, you can throw some good guesses out there. The truth is, there is no gene that is unique to a single race because race is subjective and the definition and boundaries that constitute it are always shifting.
