Lil Wayne did play apart in saving hip hop.

Nas was proclaiming it was dead, Jay & Em was retired ..

50 was lolly gagging around, and everybody else was on the lay low.

I think the "Best Rapper Alive", excatually want hip hop needed at the time.

Motivation .

Waynes emergence to challenged every artist to step up and make music.

With his constant release of free-music, (on other beats or not),

caused more and more fans to check for his latest shit.

I think this is why mixtapes are at its peak right now.

Wayne made it acceptable enuff for other artist to experiment on other artist beats.

His proclaim for "Best Rapper Alive", made other artist want to prove why he isn't.

Hip Hop always strive when the compition is there.

So, rather or not Wayne was telling the truth about "Best Rapper Alive".. it sent a spark to the other artist.

They had to spend more time in the studio, proving, or re-iterating their position in hip hop...

Especially since the kid was releasing a new mixtape, every week.

Wayne played a hand in hip hop, because took advantage of the MP3/iTune booming.

His work ethic, and dedication to feeding hip hop fans;made it a win-win situation, between him and his listeners.

Not only was he releasing great music for his fans .. He was also proving that, shit .. he might just be a GOAT.

He might not be the hands down, Best Rapper Alive .. but he sure was releasing songs/ hopping on collabs / and supporting his fans like one.

I think he's overly hated on ..

as much as i hate wayne, i'd dislike him alot less if he wasn't fake flagging an fake banging in every song. dude had a record deal when he was 11, YOU ARE NOT A STREET CAT! if it wasn't for all that, i'd be comfortable to ignore how goddamn annoying his voice is and how teenagers revere his subpar ass as a god

Yea man, I love this kind of logic. I mean, if Jay-z was never born, who the hell could Wayne steal "Best rapper Alive" and the whole "Carter" labeling. If it wasn't for Dip Set, who could he have stolen his whole appearance from. If it wasn't for Juvenile, who would have wrote for him during the earlier Cash Money years. If it wasn't for Gillie, who would have ushered him in from the "Woobily Woobily" to the swag of a east coast rapper. If it wasn't for T.Rodgers, what gang would he false flag. There's your logic.....Lil Wayne. 2010 version of Mr. Potatohead (thanks Yayo)

...Releasing all those Mixtapes and albums that he and G-Unit did back then is anything but 'lolly gagging around...'

How can you be the best rapper alive when there are atleast 25 rappers alive who is better and have put out better material. What the ts should ask is, what if other rappers didn't make songs for Lil Wayne to rap on, would he even be as popular as he is. It's quite easy to rhyme of other peoples beats, use their flow, and concept.

First off...how the fuck was hip hop in any "danger" to begin with? And how has Wayne contributed in it's "saving"?

Secondly secondly, circa 2006, Jay, TI, Ghost, The Game, Busta, Jeezy, Nas, Snoop, Clipse, Ludacris, e40, and Lupe all dropped some of their biggest albums. I think it's safe to say that in 2006, hip hop was in NO DANGER whatsoever.

Prior to '06? 50, Jeezy, TI, Dipset, Ye, and the Lil Jon crunk era turned Houston rap turned Snap was keeping the industry afloat.

Wayne isn't as bad as people say he is, at worst he is inconsistent. He didn't save hip hop as "Dr. Carter" would have us believe, but he didn't kill it either. He's a good rapper and that is all. As far as saving hip hop is concerned, i would say that Lupe did more, so did the Roots, and the many artists who responded to HHID. HHID was more of a catalyst to resurrect hip hop than anything Wayne did.

PREACH! although 04 was a bad year for hip-hop. the crunk era should be known as the dark times and i don't think houston rap did too much for music.
