am i wrong for feeling way more optimistic about the defense this year? even with the new players and DC? i got a feeling this gon be our year. as much talent as we got on the roster we'll be kinda under the radar... niggas aint expectin shit from ATL except a playoff spot at best

don't you mean at worst?? its still falcons and saints at the top, and people are probably expecting less of the saints because of the bounty penalties.

Nah, you ain't. The fact that our defense was ranked #12 despite having the dumbest DC in the league and one of the weakest pass rushes says alot.

I expect us to have a top 10 defensive with alot more forced turnovers.

Here's an interesting couple of facts about our secondary...
http://www.profootba...ency-go-routes/

Downfield Lockdown

Although receivers can be excused from a lack of efficiency on deep routes because of the effect that the one big gain can have in a game, defenders covering go routes are judged completely differently. Being in good position most of the time is useless if you have that one lapse that gives up a pivotal play to the opposition. When covering deep routes you have to be on your game all the time, and that is exactly what Asante Samuel was in primary coverage of deep routes for the Philadelphia Eagles last season.

Samuel may be known more for his ability to jump short routes and scare teams off testing his tackling skills, but he is still an extremely capable defender on deep routes. Among corners targeted at least six times in primary coverage of go routes last season, Samuel was the only man not to yield a single completion. Each of the six pass attempts he saw fell incomplete, with no drops padding his stat line.

The next best after Samuel was his new teammate in Atlanta, Brent Grimes, who allowed only one completion on nine attempts. The Falcons new corner pairing also featured prominently when covering post routes, so if the Falcons can force teams to chase games this season they won’t have to fear their corners giving up cheap passes deep down the field on last year’s evidence.

I can dig it.

Nope. All I hear on here and even on ESPN (who picked us to miss the playoffs this year) is how somehow losing to super bowl teams in the playoffs means you're the worst team in your division. lol

I remember the last time the Falcons played the Ravens...

Somebody flopped.

Or should I say, somebody GOT flopped...

Interesting excerpt from Camp today from Pat Yasinkas of ESPN...

The play of the day came on a jump ball between two of Atlanta’s best athletes. Grimes had good coverage on a pass that was thrown high for wide receiver Julio Jones. Grimes, whose vertical leap has been measured at more than 40 inches, went up as high as he could. But Jones, who also has some spring in his legs, came down with the ball.

That's not bad considering...

Grime-Time ain't no joke.

Falcons Release Manuwai

By:Jay Adams | July 28th, 2012

The Atlanta Falcons today announced that they have released guard Vince Manuwai.

Manuwai, 6-2, 333 pounds, was originally selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the third round (72nd overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft. He was signed by the Falcons as a free agent on March 9, 2012. The eight-year veteran started 105 of the 111 games he played in between 2003 and 2010.

Dam, that was fast. The squad haven't even put on their pads yet in training camp. That means the rookie, Konz, is looking really good out there or Manuwai looking like Larry Holmes. Oh well, hope the best for him. All that means is more cap space for the Falcons. I'd like for them to use that money on signing a veteran back up QB or a LT.

I think it's a lil bit of both. And co-sign signing a LB. I'm giving up on Mike Smith signing somebody other than Chris Redman to back up Matty. I think Redman and Chris Owens caught Arthur Blank sniffin' coke with some hoes from Magic City or something, 'cause no matter what happens, they stay on the roster.

Yea, I heard about Grime-Time fielding punts too. Don't know how serious it is though.

And yeah, Davis has the strongest arm from the team and is doing pretty well in camp from what I hear. He doesn't have much touch tho.

The media or anybody didnt mention the name Curtis Lofton one time in the last three years. Now that he the Falcons, now he's a beast of a linebacker and could become one of the best in the NFL.

lol

Bruh, you should've saw that coming. Never fails.

so what are expectations like for the falcons heading into this 2012-2013 season?? will winning a playoff game be enough, or is it superbowl or bust??
