I still don't understand how Geno was about to get a 3rd season to prove he could play in the NFL while E.J. Manuel couldn't even get a year and a half with the Bills.

You're comparing a guy in Geno that was not ready to play in the first place but in spite of that showed progress from year 1 to year 2. Still was inconsistent but showed progress and improved. Geno looked better in his first 2 years than Fitz looked in his 4th and 5th seasons.
